Anyone been picked for jury service?

So i got this letter saying that i was randomly chosen to see if I'm eligible for jury service. I have to fill out a questionnaire and send it out within 5 days. If I don't fill out the questionnaire, get this, I could get fined for up to $5000 and/or face imprisonment for 6 months!!
how ridiculous is that?
I'm only 19 and its the first time I heard that jury service is a civic responsibility, it is really stupid that they'd make you face those charges for not replying to a questionnaire...WTF!!!

19 and never heard of it? Doesn't it make you curious why they have those fines? It's because no one has any sense of civic duty anymore and they are only motivated by punative measures. Fill out the questionaire, go sit in on some trial and maybe learn a thing or two about how your country works....

i got called back when I was a junior in college to jury duty. Since I am a resident of the BX in NY...I had to go to the lovely Bronx Community Courthouse!! That monstrosity building right behind the old Yankee Stadium. I made it through the first day without being called, but on the second day was called up. Case sounded interesting...but in the end I didn't get picked and I was free to go. ....it seems they let anyone in college off.

You have to take time off of work to go and they pay you some measly amount like $15/day to do it. It's crap.

last time i got jury duty i forgot to go on my assigned day.. so i ended up going in a few days later to make up for it, and just my luck that day they were selecting the jury for a murder trial. of course i ended up getting selected for it, and the trial lasted a month.

all said and done though i thought it was really interesting and looking back im glad i did it. it was a good experience, even if it was 4-5 weeks of jury duty lol

I have a question on this: If you have a criminal background, will they still call you for service?

I would imagine not on a felony, but what about on a misdemeanor? I would think that criminal past would insinuate problems with authority/the law?

I got summoned 2 months ago but never got selected. The jurors that did get selected were all between the ages of 40-60, had very conservative clothes on, were mostly male, and all were white. The defendant was a black man accused of robbery. I found this very interesting to say the least...

it's your civil duty. Plus, it's really not that bad. Some cases could be interesting.

$5/day here and yes, I cashed the check.

Neither prosecution nor defense want opinionated leaders FWIW. They both want sheeple.
