US Corolla GR Teased with Easter Eggs on Social Media

Toyota GR Corolla Officially Teased For The US
Quote:
It's finally happening! After lots of speculation, Toyota is officially teasing the GR Corolla hot hatch for the United States. Unfortunately, the image only provides a few scant details about the vehicle.

The folks at the GR Corolla Forum noticed the hidden Easter eggs in Toyota's Instagram post. First, the time to the upper right of the speedometer shows G16. This is a reference to the G16E-GTS 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that powers the GR Yaris.

Next, the road on the navigation system is GR Four. This refers to the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system.

Also, what's visible on the climate control display shows "2 68." The number alludes to the 268 horsepower (200 kilowatts) like the GR Yaris makes in Japan. The European version of that hot hatch has 257 hp (192 kW).

Finally, squint at the right side of the image to see a tiny, camouflaged GR Corolla on the road. It's so small, that we can't discern any details, beyond the vehicle having a hatchback body.

It's worth noting that this image is an existing Corolla photo, and the company adds these hidden details to the picture. This means that the cabin on display here is not of an actual GR Corolla.

Rumors about a GR Corolla have circulated since the debut of the GR Yaris. Toyota even fanned the flames in a tweet that said: "While GR Yaris isn't hitting the states…perhaps it's time the U.S. got a hot hatch to call its own."

The leading info is that the Corolla GR would arrive in late 2022. Let's hope we don't have to go through a year of teasers before Toyota finally tells us all of the details Earlier reports suggest it might make as much as 296 hp (221 kW) from a tuned version of the 1.6-liter three-cylinder. Although, this new teaser image suggests otherwise.

If its anything like the Yaris GR it should be excellent, will be great competition for the Civic Si/R, WRX, and GTI/Golf R, and above all else will benefit from Toyota reliability.

The big risk is just how expensive it maybe. I'd imagine it will be priced close to a CTR

Kind of a weird teaser. Might as well have put the GR corolla in a where’s Waldo camo and put it in with a bunch of other Waldo’s.

Hopefully that carbon roof makes it but doubt it
Should be a fun little hatch if it lands less than 35$k
Might be time to replace the MK7 GTI daily beater

The GR Yaris is an incredible vehicle. Hopefully the Corolla comes close. A lot of interesting Japanese vehicles heading our way in the next year.

The only problem with the GR Yaris is the price. In the UK with the circuit pack it's nearly the same price as a Civic Type R. It does have AWD but we are talking a subcompact car with 3-cylinder engine here and the interior is very low rent. I would imagine the same engine and AWD system in the larger Corolla is going to push it up another level past Golf R pricing.

You're saying a $10k price premium, and a Yaris and a Corolla are not $10k apart in base form. Further, the CTR is terrible inside (and out) so the Yaris is fine competing at that price level. I'd be fine with the Corolla being a little over a CTR, or around $38k.

The CTR is nothing special inside but a GR Yaris has the interior of a 20 year old car. It's not even close. I feel confident it's going to be over $40k and close to $45k. Toyota has never done a performance car on the cheap or good value unless they were made by Subaru or even BMW.

The GR Yaris is WAY more special and is deserving of its price premium regardless of interior appointments. The GR Yaris will be a collector car...the CTR not so much.

The CTR will be a collector car. You only have to look at what ITR's or clean S2000's go for used. They produced a lot more CTR's but clean, low mileage ones will be collector cars for sure. I'm sure the GR Yaris will be a collector car in EU and markets it was sold in but we aren't getting a Corolla version to which hasn't been officially unveiled. For all we know it could be FWD.

To be fair, historically old Honda sporty cars have almost always fetched more $ as they are generally more appreciated. The current CTR, especially the LE, is likely going to be a collector much faster than the up and coming Corolla GR.

GR Yaris though is going to be a collector because they are rare and not sold globally, but likelihood is it'd be another one of those slow risers.

I don't agree. Now that the CTR is globally available and that it's continuing on into future Gen Civics, it's not going to be a collectible like people think. It's not a low volume car and nothing particularly incredible about it that every new generation won't make better. Will they always fetch a decent return in the used market years from now? Yes of course.

The GR Yaris though (forgetting about what market it's available in) will most likely be a very quick to rise collectible the moment they stop producing them. That's usually the nature of homologation bred vehicles.

Still FWD? Likely sub 300 HP. zzzz
The biggest con here is I am guessing we will have a $40k, or more, Corolla with this thing.

However, if it actually has fun to drive factor & can complete with something like the Civic Type-R for example, and remains affordable, it could be a hit.

Awd, ability to send 70% back, which is 20% more than Haldex cars.

Thats the key right there, adding that will increase the market reception from enthusiasts by a decent margin. I really wish hyundai would do some trick awd system too for their N lines (if they had awd in their N lines to begin with).
