Nice! Just drove in on my 80-mile commute in my wife's 23-year old Z3. Such a sweet, raw, engaging car. You've got 12 years on me

50 is old? I'm over 50 and I drive a 440i -- F32 kind not the latest one.

Personally I don't think an SUV is neither sporty nor utilitarian. I drive my car just for the joy and I have a full size truck to haul and tow. But if you must combine 2 in 1. The X5 is a comfortable and competent vehicle. It's roomy and plush.

My fiance has a CX-5, not sure if anything drastic happened between that an the CX-5 Turbo, but I am not a fan. Especially for longer trips. Arm rest is too far back, so are the dials for the infotainment system. Leg room is tight for me as well, and I'm neither tall (5' 10") or heavy. Transmission shift points in sport mode bother the hell out of me, and it can be jerky at low speeds. I've heard others have good experiences with it, but I can't wait until we get rid of it. Get a CPO F80 M3, they're getting near your budget now.

OP: Maybe you have underlying conditions that make you "feel" old at 50. Then I can understand where you're coming from.

TBH: I'm going to be 51 soon and I would daily drive an Ariel Atom if I could. I have a highly modified GTI and a '17 Porsche C2 - both cars are manual. When I drive the wife's X3, I'm a bit bored. Too soft, no manual and sitting up high isn't my thing for daily driving (although I'm really intrigued with the new Bronco for some reason).

Sorry you feel old at almost 50. If you can, make some life choices to take back your youth. I still do Spartan Races and actively cross-train on a daily basis to keep myself young and feeling good. Hope you're able to do the same.

Only reason I wish one of our vehicles was an SUV would be to haul more stuff, hopefully the desire/need to do this goes down as I get older, not up. Most SUV's don't carry more people and virtually none are going off road. I guess you don't have to bend down as far as you do in a sedan but at 50 I hope I am at least 15-20 years away from this being a consideration.

OP: I can't fault someone for wanting to get something different as they get older. But you're going from something moderately sporty to flat out boring. I don't think getting something more compliant and easier to get into equals dull and boring. All those vehicles you listed would be perfectly fine for my wife who has no interest in vehicles and just wants something that sits up high.

I'm not going to speak about price, but if you're a car guy and want to still have something that at least a little interesting, why not (new or used):
Any X3 you can afford with an I6 turbo
X5
Macan S/GTS/Turbo
Cayanne (regular, S, GTS)
New Land Rover Defender
Upcoming Ford Bronco
Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk (V6, diesel, or V8)
Kia Stinger
Any of the Genesis offerings
Lexus GS-F
Any current Volvo

I' sure there are other options to consider, but the point being that there are a myriad of ways to get into something a little smoother with at least a little bit of style.

If you can stomach the styling, I really enjoyed driving a Lexus GS 350 F-type. Better road feel and quicker steering than a 5-series but with Lexus reliability. I had narrowed my choices to M3 or GS350F and the M3 won due to looks.

Yep solid call, Lexus is quiet, runs well and Toyota quality. 4 dr or 2, both handle decent, like the F sport look obviously, and suspension and brakes slight upgrade.
