So I purchased a 2008 535i from a private seller. Test drove the vehicle and drove fine. Literally got home next day. Went to go start the car and I was struggling to start talk to the guy and he claimed all I needed was O2 sensors. Scanner pull the code for misfire on sensor 1-3 all codes thus Fae I replaced all the sensors O2 senso struggles to get anywhere through first or second or third gear and it will let me go over like 60 miles an hour that’s if I make it to 60 miles an hour because it takes like 20 minutes to get to 60 miles an hour. I’m only joking. But there’s no get up and go. And when you’re driving it, backfires, smells of fuel, literally no acceleration when I gas it pops and stutters.
My question is what can make it do that this be my first BMW I’m at a loss do the O2 sensors I’m checking the coil packs and spark plugs today. Could it be the mass airflow sensor or possibly a fuel pump? I’m not sure and like I said, I’m new to this BMW I’m form. Thank you for your time !!! |

Fuel injectors? When they fail, they are known to leak into cylinders and onto the spark plugs, creating misfires and a strong gas smell. I think you can test by pulling the plug and seeing if it's wet.

There was gas on plug 4 , cleaned it up and nothing since. And I’m only getting misfires on bank 1. Wouldn’t it be pulling a code from bank 2 then? But you would lean heavier towards fuel injectors than the fuel pump? It drives OK for the first 10 minutes and then it starts acting up like crazy almost stalling, rough, rough, rough, idle, and zero acceleration. It literally takes me a minute to get to 35 miles an hour.

I have been having similar issues out of my 09 535 XI. I’ve changed everything BUT the injectors to this point, with little improvement being noted to this point. My last steps are to change the after cat O2’s, if that doesn’t T fix it, then it’s injector time, as much as I can’t afford then at this time. My first Bimmer too and even though it runs like hot sh!¥ sometimes, has rarely been out of limp mode, I love that damn car.

I changed all my o2 sensors, still same issue. I did get a weird fuel pressure reading today. So maybe the regulator or fuel pump. However I cleaned the MAF today and it hasn’t staulded out and is actually driving. Not anywhere close to where it should be but improvement since yesterday. But still misfiring on bank 1. Did you do the filter or regulator yet? And you checked all your vacuume lines right ? Let me know what you find out, pulling the injectors and cleaning them wouldn’t be difficult just grab some SeaFoam spray. Also I do have a muffler delete so I’m not sure if that plays a factor in acceleration.
