What do u mean getting into photography? I mean if you just want to take pix then just get a P&S. If you want more controls, options, etc. then get a Digital SLR- it uses memory and u can print out the pix but you don't have to process your own film.

Don't have anything to add to this discussion, but browsing the thread titles just now, I could have sworn this said "Getting into Pornography, Suggestions?".
I think I need some sleep!

you could get a pretty nice entry level DSLR for cheap. even used one will do if you want to
look into D40/D50 or a used D70/80/90. I know you could buy a used D70s with a lens for about $450 right now

same here. i'm actually thinking about a Nikon D40. This review pretty much made up my mind. And it's only $450 including a lens on BestBuy.

Honestly, if you plan on going the dslr route, get a camera with a better sensor and better kit lens. I had never ever shot a dslr before I bought my d90, which is the one I would recommend, and it's amazing. If your spending 450 on a dslr, and if you end up liking photography, which you will hehe, you will want to upgrade pretty quick. Start out with a badass consumer grade dslr with a great sensor and a good kit lens, again my hat goes to the d90 as I believe it's the best camera out there for under 1200, and you won't regret it. I'm glad I didn't get an intro dslr because I know I will never outgrow the capabilities of the camera...wow...all that on an iPhone lol

Obviously everyone is biased toward which ever brand/system they owe so I'm not going to get into that argument. However, I think that we shouldn't say that so and so is the best in the category based on our personal opinion. Either way, either Nikon or Canon will suit your needs just fine OP. |

i started w/ the nikon d40x... great camera. my friend has the canon xti and i think the nikon is easier on beginners. it has a nifty help button that tells u what stuff does- incase you ever forget what iso and aperture does.

If all you're ready to do is "point and click" then buy a "point and shoot" camera, like the G10 mentioned earlier in this thread. You can take great pictures with that camera, such that you won't regret their poor quality if you later decide to get serious about photography and move to a DSLR.
I've got a DSLR and many argue here that you should start with a DSLR, but I think that someone at the very beginning of the hobby should start with a high quality P&S camera. The convenience of the auto-zoom and intelligent auto-exposure settings allow you to get pretty deep into the hobby without the complications of mulitple lenses and added bulk of a DSLR. Dave
