looking to upgrade Sony or Canon?

What do you guys think of the new Sony A7RIII? I am researching and finally want to jump to full frame. My other option is a Canon 5D Mark IV.

I currently shoot canon and have nothing but Canon lenses....but the Sony's in body image stabilization is very appealing. I typically have to buy IS lenses since I have naturally shaky hands.

I'm leaning towards to the Sony and just use an adapter for my Canon lenses

As long as you have the budget to get sony/zeiss lenses do it. I did the switch from a canon 5dm2 to an a7 years ago and the lenses were so limited that I went and bought an adapter to use my left over canon primes on the a7.

That was really my biggest complaint on the sony camera. Since I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much on lenses, I eventually went back to canon and grabbed a 5dm4.

I love my 5DM4 but the primary reasons for not changing to Sony or Nikon were all the kit we already had in the family, and the usability.

I have a 7D as as a second body, the wife has a 7D, the child has a 400D and we have a fair few lenses. I was upgrading from my 7D and replacing a load of lenses at the same time (crop to full frame) so Sony and Nikon did get a look but I personally think the usability of the 5D is above that of the both Sony and Nikon.

I now second body an a7r iii. With a metabones adapter for canon EF, it's so good. you get a much better feature set for the same money.

That's what i'm leaning towards. I also like the size of the Sony a bit more than the Canon. Would love to own both tho

Late responding, but the Sony a7RIII blows away any current Canon body, in terms of resolution and dynamic range. I moved from the 5D4 to an a9 and a7RIII combo. I've got the Metabones adapter MkV, at use it with my EF 14mm f/2.8L II and my EF 500mm f/4L IS II. There's no loss of function with the wide angle, but a little slowness with the 500mm. I've tried it with the adapter and the EF 24-105mm, the 70-200mm and the 100-400mm, with no loss of functionality.

I have gone to the FE 12-24/f4, the FE 24-70/f2.8 and the FE 100-400mm for the Sony's lock-on AF functions and the eye-detect AF functions. The EF lenses don't have these AF enhancements.

So, to summarize the a7RIII gives you WYSIWYG EVF functionality, lock-on AF in several modes, eye-detection AF, silent shutter, hundreds more AF points, AF down to f/11 and a little more than one-stop additional DR.

Go for it.

just FYI, Sony bought Konica Minolta about 5 years ago to get into the DSLR game. So from what i have gathered, you can run older Minolta lenses on newer Sony DSLR camera bodies and save some money on lenses.

Sony is putting all its research and development budget into mirrorless. To get the full functionality of the system (eye-detection AF, lock-on AF, etc.) you need current generation G and G-Master lenses. Yes, you can get adapters for a wide range of fine old lenses, but they're still old lenses and don't have the functionality of the GM lenses, which is astounding.

I think I'm sold on the Sony. I've read that they are all in on the mirrorless game and looking to invest 3billion by 2021 which could pave the way for some nice innovations. I love the Canon ecosystem but their product line hasn't expanded into anything mind blowing in years.

I went and held the Sony A7R3 at a local shop the other day and I like the feel and size more compared to the 5DMK4.

For a Canon shooter, the controls of the a9 and a7RIII fall readily to hand (fingers). In manual mode, SS is set by a horizontal wheel at the back, top right, aperture is set by wheel at the front, top right and ISO is set with the vertical control wheel on the back. Als0, seeing the exposure change in the EVF makes Manual shooting so much easier. There's no excuse for a grossly under or over-exposed shot.

The AF is so good that it literally feels like "cheating" vs. the Canon. Oh, and the files of the a7RIII are stunning. The extra dynamic range is obvious when you shoot in conditions where DR is high.

owning both, having a big FF lens on an A7R3 basically removes most of the size advantage. FF AF lenses are generally kind of big.

The Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS is not large at all. Add the FE 2.0x teleconverter and you've got a nifty, handheld 200-800mm!

You'll love the a7RIII. It'll absolutely blow your old 60D into the weeds.

I'm using the Metabones EF-to-E T-adapter MkV with good results. B&H has 170-reviews of the MC-11, which run the full gamut.

The story sounds similar to my experience with EF L-series lenses on my a9 and a7RIII. Nothing beat the native G-Master Sony lenses. None of the adapters provide all of the focus modes that you get with the GM lenses. I use various "Lock-on" AF modes that aren't available with the EF lenses on ANY body. I continue to use my EF 14mm f/2.8L II, because it's a great ultra-wide and AF is just not an issue for its usage.

If you've got some great L-series lenses, like a macro, or like my ultra-wide, you'll be happy with the adapter. However, don't buy that incredible body without at least one GM lens. The Lock-on AF is amazing, as is eye-detect, which you only get with the Sony lenses.

I dont own any L lenses. $$ is tight but I do own a sigma 18-35mm Art lens for the canon. I have been reading and watching videos showing that with the mc-11 adapter, most of the Focus ones work when you update the software on the lens and adapter. Even the Eye-af works which seems to be amazing from videos i have seen.

Well then, seems like the mc-11 is the way to go.
