Online order taking a weird route to my home

I live in central IL. See it over there on the right side of the map? I recently ordered a new SSD from Crucial. Here's the path it has taken thus far.

It sorta looks like the selling vendor is doing a drop-ship deal. They are located in Brownsville, and had to generate a shipping label in order to mark the order as shipped to get your money released. The next day, they placed the order with the Idaho company, who printed the shipping label and handed the package off to UPS to start its odyssey to your wounded iMac.....

That could be. It's Crucial.com and I didn't go through a 3rd party, but it is possible that they generate shipping orders in Texas and actually ship from Idaho, I guess.

I once tracked a package that showed it passing right through the destination city, go 3 states over and 2 states down before finally making somewhat of a diagonal back 4 days later. It was scanned over a dozen times before it made it.

I once ordered a part that was shipped California to OKC then to Chicago, then Back to OKC, then back to Chicago, then back to OKC before finally arriving in Tulsa.

Back in the 1980's when FedEx was expensive and offered a refund if a package didn't make it overnight, I scored free overnight shipping whenever I ordered something from the west coast with priority AM delivery. For whatever reason, the packages were routed through Newark, NJ, and there was no hope that they could drive it up here into banjo music country by 10:30 AM. When it finally showed up in the afternoon, the delivery driver already had the late delivery reimbursement claim paperwork filled out when he handed me the packages.

Given the choice of paying for UPS Ground and waiting a week, it was worth the $35/package gamble to get my items the next afternoon.....

Does it show your destination on the tracking number? More than a few times I've had the wrong tracking number provided for my shipment and found it to go to another address.

All the shipping companies have been terrible lately. We are having issues at work with Ups not picking up or picking up late and orders sitting around for a few days. Your package has probably been in the same spot for a few days and the tracking is screwed up.

Sometimes the package wasn’t actually rendered to the courier but got scanned for some reason. That’s happened to me and friends recently. Once packages were actually handed over we got it 2 days later with Prime shipping. But yes, there’s also the routes that packages are going.

So I told our logistics people ship it FedEx; they looked at me really funny. The hardware showed up 2 days later. When I told my UPS contact it was coming FedEx he said "good idea". The issue he finally admitted to was, there's a standing rule that after a package processing shift, if there is a package left in the facility, someone gets their ass kicked. A FedEx package sticks out like a sore thumb at a UPS facility...

Someone saw the FedEx package, said WTF, and actually read the FedEx ship-to address.
But how does that relate to it getting lost three times by UPS?

oh I see, that makes sense. So they see the 3 different UPS packages and think they missed being placed into a truck or on a shipment instead of actually reading the label and see it is being delivered to their actual hub. Totally makes sense from all the crazy stuff I have seen with my packages and packages I have sent.

My sister in FL once shipped me a hard drive via USPS to rescue some data. She screwed up the first digit of my zip code, but otherwise had the address right, including a clearly written town and state. Nonetheless, it roamed around the country for two weeks and was twice in a post office an hour north of us, both times getting shipped back out to the mis-typed zip code. I attributed it to some machine reading the zip and routing it accordingly. Finally someone actually looked at the city and state and delivered it to our house.

I'd call that luck. Zip code is what gets it close. Some poor schlub sits there reading zip codes and pounding on a keypad. My guess would be that someone recognized the package the third time through and thought, WTF.

hahaha, that's nothing. I ordered something from a store 30 miles away. I could've driven there in 34 minutes to pick it up but decided, meh, free shipping, why not.

post office picked up 8/11. I got it 8/18. It traveled the state and took a trip one state over. I ordered something from Hong Kong at the same time, it took DHL Express three days to get it to me.

The label looked fine. Zip code was correct. No clue why my car parts and fluids took a roundabout trip.

Meanwhile, my son's glasses from 8/6 are still lost somewhere in the USPS system. The replacements arrived yesterday but the original order is somewhere between here and California.

I had a package shipped from California to Florida via FedEx recently. It arrived in Memphis twice. Yep you read that correctly. I have no idea how it left Memphis and went back there twice. Ultimately it then vanished like a fart in the wind and they have no idea where the package ended up.

So you're stating that your solid state arrived in a solid state in the right state...

I haven't opened the package yet, but I'll go out on a limb here and say yes.

Interesting thing happened to my DW this weekend. She had a rather large/bulky package from an online shop that shipped FedEx (not a rush shipment, FedEx Ground or Home), that was scheduled for delivery on Sunday. FedEx claimed to have made the delivery at 3:37 PM Sunday on their tracking site. We were home, our OCD psycho dog did not alert to a delivery truck, my security cameras did not record any traffic on our street, and there was most definitely no package outside our house.

She called the vendor first thing Monday, who claimed to have run a package trace with FedEx and they confirmed delivery. They said that if it wasn't on our porch, someone must have stolen it.

My DW wanted to call the police at this point, but I told her to sit tight. I figured that the Sunday FedEx driver wanted to go home early, and marked all of the packages still on the truck as delivered to meet their shipping SLA and left them for the weekday driver to deal with.

Sure enough...at exactly 3:37 PM on MONDAY...a FedEx truck pulled up...OCD psycho dog went bonkers...and the package was delivered.

In case you were wondering, the package was a high-value item...72 rolls of toilet paper.....
