I Just May Be The Only One - But I Doubt It!

I may be the only one, but I doubt it. As I'm having a strong yearning to experience ownership of the legendary V10 M5. My only concern is,..something catastrophic going wrong and I'm stuff with a vehicle needing some $15K or so in repairs within a year or so of ownership.

That said,...and at the prices they are at these days,...I'd like to have one and treat it as a 4-door motorcycle! Drive only on fair weather days, etc.

The catch is,...if you buy one on the low end,...there is sure to be an expensive repair! And if you buy one on the higher end,...there is still sure to be an expensive repair. So, what gives? Luck of the draw!

That said, this tends to leave me with a mindset of,...although one may really want an E60 (Exotic engined) M5,....one really doesn't want an E60 (Exotic engined) M5.

What say you?

I am right there with you. I have an E60 530i, but I look at M5s on ebay on an almost nightly basis. It is unbelievable how cheap E60 M5s can be had these days, even clean low mileage examples. The only thing that keeps me from buying one now is that I don't know that I'd be able to set aside the time to work on it regularly and keep it in A+ running conditions at all times. It is definitely tempting though.

If you have the means, are good with a wrench, don't have to rely on it for transportation, and have a garage space for it I'd seriously consider one if I were you.

Again,,,right there with you. I know my way around tools and engine bays,...and have DIY a lot of repairs on previously owned BMWs, etc. In fact, I performed all required maintenance on my '88 535is from bumper to bumper,...adjusting of valves,...replacement of Timing Chain Guide,...Clutch,...Throw-Out Bearing, Driveshaft,..Exhaust, etc. Nowadays,...I have no time to work extensively on a vehicle,...so, nearly all work pass replacement of wiper blades will mean a visit to the dealer. OK,...I recently replaced the rear shocks on my '10 535xi Sport! But like you, the question is,...do I even want to consider the time needed to replace the Throttle Body Actuator?

I just watched a YouTube vid on a 65" TV showing a Tech replacing the TBA,...and some of the nuts securing the Intake Plenum appeared to be very hard to get to,...and mind you, for the M5,...that may just be considered a "minor repair"!

E60 M5 is probably not a good choice for you. Lack of available spare time is what keeps me in my 530i.
