Paint pulled off removing factory PPF

Very unhappy with what happened today. Brand new M3 with less than 70 miles. It's been with my PPF guy for a week now. Getting the entire car ppf'd. He goes to remove the passenger side factory ppf film and a chunk of the paint came off with the film.

My ppf guy is telling me something's up with the paint in that area. Like it wasn't cured before they slapped on the film. Or some work/fix was done in that area. Other side came off smoothly. I've had my wife's f80 m3 and my 991 911s done by him as well. Both of those cars have ppf on the front 1/4 panel as well and it was never a issue.

Needless to say I'm just bummed out. I reached out to my sales guy at autobahn bmw about this paint issue. He said he'll talk with the service director on Monday. I'm hoping for the best.

Oh man, this makes me want to throw up. Sorry to see this

I just can’t see this happening with a factory BMW finish. Likely the car incurred damage enroute from Germany and repaired at the dealer or port? I’ve seen a couple stories reported of bodywork being completed on certain cars and the dealer not required to report it.

That was something I did think about. This car was my allocation build which took the longest sitting at the port. Kept switching between at port and in transit for months. My ppf install guy suspects some sort of repair or fix to that area.

He's a professional and has done thousands of ppf installs. He does vinyl wraps and commercial vinyl graphics for commercial vehicles as his bread and butter. Local car dealerships contract out to him for graphics installs on brand new vehicles. This shouldn't have happened to a brand new car.

Yep, and contrary to popular belief there is a thing as it being too thick.

I'm talking about car paint you degenerates.

Looks to me like the PPF location did not take their time and heat up the surface before trying to remove it. As a dealer I would tell you it will be a tough battle to get dealer or BMW to pay for their negligence. Also it is not BMW responsibility if someone tries to remove the factory PPF. That is a customer decision not a defect from manufacturer.

With all that said, if you are a loyal good customer, as a dealer I would try to fix it and make you happy.

The PPF in that location isn't meant to last forever. I'd like to think that the paint would be more durable than that and would withstand someone under heating during the removal process. It's not even on an edge or anything. Plenty of cars have had PPF on the rear like this for awhile and it's not like this is a common issue.

I am empathetic to your issue, however BMW NA never intends for you to remove the factory PPF. BMW NA is not responsible for this issue, if you have a strong relationship with your dealership they may help you out but BMW most likely will refer to the dealers goodwill account for this issue.

Where does it say BMW never intended the PPF film to be removed? How can you be quick to say the paint isn't a defect from the manufacturer? Do you know how many guys with M3s have done full PPF on their cars where the existing PPF film needs to be removed?

Why are you quick to judge my installer didn't heat up the film before removal? It's an assumption on your part. He's done multiple cars for me in the past where factory PPF removal was required for the job.

As others have stated, simple removal of the film shouldn't peel off the paint. I don't know how you can come off blaming me of negligence just because I requested to have the area upgraded with full coverage.

If you read my post I never called you negligent. Good luck with your warranty claim, I’m curious to see how it goes. I hope you can get this resolved to your satisfaction.

My apologies. Just stressed out with the situation. Last thing I wanted on a brand new car less than 2 weeks old is some paint work. I'm still waiting on the dealership to see what they'll say.
