I'm geeting about 450miles from a tank of diesel.

Diesel is slightly more expensive than petrol in the UK, I would imagine a tank of petrol is $96 USD or £54 GBP / €80 EUR. For that i'm guessing you guys with 325/330 are getting 350 miles a tank???

To all those US friends complaining about gas prices, spare a thought for us Brits.

UK fuel is now approaching $8 a gallon.

That's why we like diesels thatdo 50mpg and don't touch V8's!!

Holy shit....50mpg on a diesel(where's our diesel?).....my other vehicle gets 15mpg...and it has a 23.9 gallon capacity.....it would cost me around $175 to fill her up in the UK........you Brits are crazy!

I think the point is that they are not crazy. Most of us would be buying diesels too at those prices. I can't stand the sound of diesels but I would hate paying that much for gas even more.

When I rent a car in Europe, I ALWAYS specify a diesel. The perfomance is good, the motors are smooth and quiet (mercedes diesel), and the mileage is phenominal.

Out of interest, the new BMW diesels are so good, many of us Brits now chose them in preference to petrol cars - not just for cost reasons but for driveability too.

My last E46 touring averaged 48mpg over 80,000 miles. I recently test drove an E90 saloon with the new 163hp 2 litre diesel (320d) and it is a match for a petrol 330i for acceleration between say 30-50 or 50-70 (the figures back this up).

OK you can tell it's a diesel from outside and at idle and up to 20mph from inside, but at cruising speed it's whisper quiet. Over 600 miles on a tank of fuel is easily achievable too.

I was 'forced' into diesel due to costs, but wouldn't go back to petrol now unless it was significantly cheaper to do so.

The figures do back it up - but unfortunately it's another of those industry standards that give a slightly misleading figure. You'll find these stats were measured in 4th gear. I agree the diesel will win, because it can ride it's wave of torque. But a petrol version could be in 2nd gear (30-50) and 2nd/3rd gear (50-70) which would allow it to use all its power to beat the diesel.

Still, the diesel makes it seem more effortless and gives a stonking mpg - I just needed to have the 6 cylinders and 7000rpm!

Gas is $2.87 here in SE Michigan area.

Relax...it will go back down shortly...and probably by alot in the next 6 months.

Yeah I hope so, cause i left my house today and on the way to where i was going the 76 station showed 91 at $2.89, and on the way home, it was $2.97. Same station.. 2 hrs difference.
The one by my house is now $3.27.

This technology may not be new to you...I have noticed that some of the newer gas stations are installing digital price indicators. I assume this is beacuse the price of gas changes so fast that the it can not be changed by hand fast enough.

We "saved" their asses for US/UK oil corps. Well over 50% of the profits rest comfortably in the bank accounts of Exon, Chevron, BP, et al. in the form of "oil concessions". If you still have doubts, check out their stock. I think you'll find the culprits on this side of the pond rolling in our dough.

Man oh man oh man. I can remember going cruising in high school and we'd fill up the tank at $0.87 a gallon. Easily it would only take about $5.00 to get us where we were going! Those were the days! That was back in 1996-1997. Now it's about $2.98 here for premium. I had a big discussion on using premium here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...?t=3297&page=2

Anyway, I hope my new E90 won't be obsolete by next year. At the rate gas prices are going (I know you guys in europe have it a lot worse than we do here in the states) who knows for how much longer gasoline engines will even be around! Though I doubt water-powered engines will be out anytime soon, I hope when they do come out, there'll be some kind of conversion kit for my bimmer!

If you think about it, oil companies rule the world. Without oil, the world literally wouldn't move.

There is such a thing as productive "whining". Changes that affect our futures in important ways are not trivial. If BMW has good foresight then a lot of us on this list will be much happier 10 and 20 years from now. A lot of my neighbors are feeling sheepish and duped in regard to their decisions to buy large SUVs and fancy 4wd pickups. Interesting conversation across the fence row the other day, with a friend that once thought driving his large pickup was an act of patriotism, but is leaving it in the garage because he now feels it is just the opposite. I see his point. And I see the beauty of the 320d. We here in the USA should be thankful that folks in Euro are suffering the higher costs of fuel there, and the changes in automobiles that such costs are catalyzing. The Chinese economy is coming on line in a big way over the next few decades; burying our heads in the sand and wishing it will all go away and leave us in our temporary nirvanas is not a good idea. So whine on, if you think BMW is listening. And by the way, the neighborhood kids now want to ride in a BMW that gets 30+ mpg instead of a hummer.
