Let's have the truth-Driving Habits

When stuck in traffic. How many of us will always give way for another M or BMW, while selfishly cutting off or ignoring the other cars trying to get into your lane.

Let in everyone. We are all stuck in this misery, no reason to make it worse for people trying to get over to exit (for example). I goddam hate people that refuse to let others in.

If you cut off someone that is trying to merge into your lane, then the traffic gods will be sure to adjust the speed of traffic in the adjacent lanes so that the guy you cut off will end up right next to you during a standstill. Not worth the awkward moments it will cause.

Don't be a dick... letting someone in won't make you get to you there any faster.

I give people a two second window with a decent amount of room to get in. If I don't see any reaction with their turn signal on, I will close the gap. My logic is that if they don't move into my lane of traffic, they don't know their signal is on, or, they suck at driving and honestly, I don't like being stuck behind drivers that leave huge gaps or constantly jab on their brakes. I know, pretty selfish.....

Living in MN...NOBODY lets you in. Which is funny, because I grew up in NJ, and while people from Jersey drive aggressive, fast and honk at everything. They still let you merge. In Minnesota they will go as far as BLOCKING the merge lane (like when two lanes are going into one), so you cant even get in. They want you to wait in one single file line. Minnesota drives are terrible.

I try to be polite and fair and let people in, but I hate getting stuck behind someone that lets EVERYONE in - makes me feel like I am going backwards

That's funny because it's true! Good god, that 494/35w interchange ... or highway 100/394

In traffic I will always make room for motorcycles (can lane split in CA) and spendy cars - no minivans, no prii, and no "activists" who I think are going to drive like they're making a point. A lot of activists in MN too.

Actually yesterday I and a giant pickup truck forced an Explorer activist out of the left lane - was kinda fun. Driving the speed limit in the left lane and refusing to move?

If two lanes are merging, it should work like a zipper. If no lanes are merging and its bumper to bumper I'll usually let someone into my lane in front of me if they are signaling and actually move when I allow the space to open up (I'm not going to wait forever). If they lack the confidence to actually take the space when I open it up, I'll just go since they're usually the overly-cautious type that can't make a decision and can't seem to keep up with the cars in front of them when traffic does start to move.

What awkward moment? Why do you care what someone who you're never going to meet face-to-face 99.9999% of the time thinks about you anyway?

I'm not saying to be a dick, just why do you care what they think? How often do you give another driver even 2 seconds of your time thinking about what they did or didn't do to you? Here's a clue: the vast majority of people think about you or what you did A LOT less than you think they do.

I always let people in if:

- They use their signal
- It is safe to do so, meaning I don't have to jam on the brakes or otherwise cause a major impedance to the drivers behind me
- They had no prior opportunity to merge that would have avoided inconveniencing myself or others
- It is clear that they are making a genuine attempt to do so in the least possibly obstructive way rather than aggressively cutting others off

In cases where one or more of those conditions aren't met, it is more hit and miss. I may let the person in, I may not. I think this is very fair. I expect the same sort of criteria from my fellow drivers toward me, and make every effort to adhere to these same guidelines I ask of others.

I let people in under all SAFE circumstances. there's no point in trying to teach someone a lesson out there for anything (be it lack of turn signal, reckless driving, cutting others off, etc.).

there's just nothing to gain.

Let everyone in if they using their blinkers but there is one exception for myself.

For those familiar with HW26 East going into downtown Portland from the Beaverton/Hillsboro area. Before you hit the Vista Ridge tunnel there are plenty of signs saying no lane switching once you exit the tunnel for the next half mile or so because 26 splits into 3 different directions.

The majority of people in rush hour traffic get into their appropriate lane and wait. Others try to wait till the very last minute to switch into their right lane before entering the tunnel.

Then there are those who feel entitled to completely cut everyone waiting in traffic by using the middle lane, it's typically the left and right lanes backed up here and then try to switch after exiting the tunnel where there no lane changes allowed. These are the people I NEVER let in. Funny one time karma got one of these idiots because after he did his switch I saw a undercover OSP trooper pull him over lol.

Let in everyone if it makes sense and given the road conditions. I absolutely hate people who hold up traffic because they either didn't look ahead or want to skip traffic and try to merge ahead of everyone else. Those people I never let in.

I'll let most people in, unless it's the guy that drives all the way to the front of the merge line and expects me to let him in after I waited like everyone else...

I tend to let one car in for each situation, regardless of brand. It's called merging.

However, as mentioned above, if someone has intentionally got out of the correct lane to speed down the outside in a lane that's ending, I do my best to NEVER let that person in.

I usually let everyone in if they use their turn signal. The only time I make an effort to block someone is if I see them come out of the lane from way back in an attempt to skip forward. If they try cutting in front without any indication, especially if I just saw them trying to skip forward, I'll get out of my spot in line and cut off the person that just cut me off.

If they're merging properly, I will let anyone in. I will purposely block any dick who drives to the end of the merge zone and is now driving in the shoulder. GFY.
