Best car to complement an E92 M3?

I'm contemplating getting a daily/winter beater. My M3 has been my dd for past 2 years but now that I will soon be transporting my daughter to school every morning, I will need a car with better utility. E90 M3 is an option but given that my e92 is in excellent condition with low miles, it would be hard to justify letting it go.

The criteria for this dd/winter beater are:
- awd
- 4 doors
- around $25k
- reliable
- Apple carplay would be nice
- Commute: 5 mile each way, back roads, moderate traffic

The cars that I came up with so far
- Toyota Rav4
- Toyota Prius awd-e
- Mazda 3 awd
- Subaru Forrester
- Hyundai Kona limited

I'm strangely attracted to Prius although I don't care much about fuel economy. It would surely make M3 drives even more exciting.

Appreciate your opinions

Why not a used wrx? Those choices will make you weep with their lack of guts.

We had a 2010 Prius, it was good to us but I’m glad it’s gone. I think their awd is pretty suspect.

Five mile commute isn't going to do a pure ICE any favors. The Prius Prime might allow you to do most or all of it on battery alone. Or a Volt, which are comically cheap used.

What about an i3? Still rwd and surprisingly fun to drive.

Everyone bags on Prius,' but as utility cars, they really are great. I've had one as my DD for work for 1.5 yrs. They're not meant to be fun, but neither is traffic. Might as well be comfortable. Plus, there's the bonus of being able to park it literally anywhere and not care. No idea about the AWD Prius' though.

Keep your M3 and drive it on the weekends.

Get a Jeep Wrangler. It has a cool factor. It's awesome doors off, top up. It's great in the snow. Heater is over the top good. Very easy to drive.

I have an older one and I can't begin to describe how good the dealer and support for it is. Monstrous interior too, looks smaller from the outside.

All M3 owners must also own a Raptor.

What utility do those cars have over an M3 for a small child? None really....besides 4 doors.

Our family of 3 with a 4 year old has 1 car and it's a 1M. More than enough...the M3, if anything, is probably more practical even!

I'd take a 2010 9-3 wagon over any of those cars every day. Save $20K doing it too.

The Toyota Prius awd-e will have the lowest cost to own. The are reliable, low cost vehicles and they also have the lowest insurance rates in Massachusetts. I bought one for my son and did a spread sheet on operating costs and its wins in depreciation, taxes, insurance, fuel etc. And it is a safe, well engineered, environmentally friendly car. It is also a good car to pass on to other family members.

Get a gently used Acura RDX. I have an 18’ and it’s awesome. You can probably pickup a 15’ or 16’ for somewhere in that range with low miles. You’ll get decent tech and better interior than Most cars in the same price range

I'm leaning towards this. Never though I would be driving a Prius but they are popular for good reasons. It can perhaps be my daughter's first car in 10 years.

Other suggestions are appreciated. Don't really need a large SUV as it will mainly just carry me and my daughter.

2012 or newer a6 Prestige package with the 3.0t. ECU+ trans tune, large pulley and some e85 and you a 11 sec reliable daily driver. Or a f30 or f10 n55 with a pure stage 1 turbo, fmic and some e85.

Need to wait a bit then for those.

For a five mile commute... how about a bike! If not then a Nissan Leaf. Coworker had one for his 3 mile commute and the thing was fantastic!
