Cool Wtf Is The Pc World Comming To?

do you guys see the huge ass change in performance of pc parts from 07-08? quad sli, tri sli, and the dual sli, quad crossfire, etc. having a dual sli or even a tri sli is understandable.

but quad? and expecially quad 8800's? jebus christ. did you guys see the new 9800gx2 from nvidia? the psu needed for these and could you imagine this with a 8 core amd phenom setup (x2 quad cpu)?

http://cgi.ebay.com/QUAD-CORE-QUAD-S...QQcmdZViewItem

jebus christ has the demand for pc and gaming gone up.

Some of the officers I work with spend WAY too much money on towers via the City's Employee Purchase program. One just bought an XPS from Dell and spent $3500 on just the tower. He ended up with 1.75 TB on a desktop system so he can play games!!! I think he told me the PSU was 750W. I have his "old" XPS since he tried to wipe the disk and reinstall Win and lost the drivers for the RAID. I told him I had to put in a new circuit into my office since all the lights in the house dim when I crank up his old system. Told him I could not risk the local grid to work on his new one

I think it's ridiculous how fast things are progressing. Just like the hp wars in the auto world, the pc world is undergoing a memory/cpu race. I think it's reasonable to just upgrade to a new system every four years. My current system's a bit old: 2Gig Ram, 2.8GHz single core, 6800GT. Yeah, it's really old.

I used to keep up with the new tech (went on Gamespot all the time), but I lost touch around mid to late 2006. Just too much stuff.

I built this machine about 5 years ago. P4 1.8, 1.5 gb ram, a radeon 9800XT. Honestly, with all the powerful new stuff out there I'm surprised mine even loads webpages.

However, recently since I've been looking into finally getting a new computer I've been relearning what is all out there and what is best. What i've come to find is that SLI is VERY buggy and only works with a handful of applications. The rest all just use your primary card and don't even know the other exists. A similar occurance is happening with the dual and quad core CPUs but it is less common as more programs will work with multithreading. Intel is destroying AMD. NVidia is destroying ATI. Both Intel and nVidia are releasing their next gen chips and boards but they aren't even necessary because the number of applications that will use them can probably be counted on one hand right now. And since Intel and nVidia are so far ahead of their AMD rivals (AMD owns ATI) they pretty much hold a monopoly on the high end systems which is why the top of the line 768mb 8800 Ultra costs upwards of $650.

And you thought 750w was big? Most systems that poeple will build themselves that want any type of future compatability will be housing 1000w power supplies, some even higher, since a dual 768mb 8800 GT setup will use up every bit of the 1kw.

Yeah, gaming rigs are nuts. 99% of the people out there don't need it.

I feel your pain. I built a system 5 years ago: 2.2GHz CPU single core, 1.5GB DDR RAM, 128MB AGP GFX card. Now there's all sorts of mad systems out. I need a new one lol

Are you serious? They're that much further ahead now? Man I've really lost track...(-_-')

Why do you keep up with all of that?^

I don't mean that in an offensive way, but I'm just wondering why.

Four years? You're mad. If you want to run the newest games at max setting you need to upgrade every year. My current PC is approaching that and I'm just waiting for the 9800 to drop so I can scoop one up. Maybe get a quad core and 2gigs more RAM as well. (I can just run CoD:4 at max settings @ 1920x1200)
Current specs: Core 2 Duo 6600, 2gigs of RAM (XMS, not that high latency shit), 8800 GTX (Ultra wasn't out when I built) think the PSU is 700w or so. Key tip, ALWAYS use a full tower case, mid-towers are way too cramped, I'm fairly sure my 8800 wouldn't fit in a mid tower it's so long.

You know with all the time and money people spend on games they could probably go back to college and earn another degree or go to law school or med school or possibly invest that energy into building a company... Then you might one day be able to play Forza 2 in real life with real cars whenever you wanted.

Have fun playing games. You guys have what, WoW and CoD 1?

I agree that Macs are better for general use but you've got to keep a high powered PC around to frag on.

I've been a MAC user all my life until 3 years ago.......

I switched to PC and bought a SONY system with the help of a friend.......

I only use my computer for the internet, WORD, Photoshop, and a couple of other programs.....

I don't play video games.......

My question is.....do I need to upgrade any part of my system?

I did add a 500GB external HD.......that's about it.

You never need to upgrade anything unless it cant do a task that you need it to do.

Before wasting any money upgrading an older P4 chip I would save up and invest in a core 2 duo system.

Get some mods on your car, for internet and Word you're well advanced. I bet you even have XP on that system. The external 500 was a smooth move so you can keep all the photos.
