Intriguingly, he added: “I would love to see electrified Ms in the future – hybrid and pure-electric, but if we bring them, they will be so groundbreaking that you will say: ‘This is crazy, I didn’t see that coming.’”
Really you don’t say… M3 going hybrid or EV is crazy and we didn’t see that coming…

I’m more interested to see his justification for more pig snouts

if it is, can the current M3/M4 or even the F80/F82 be a collectible since it's the last ICE car?

It depends on whether this M3 life span will get too close to the EU ICE ban in 2035, and whether they'd want to develop a M3 Hybrid for just a few cars to fill in the gap.

They did say they wanted to do that but that was before the EU ban was passed despite Germany's vehement protest. I had thought that this would have surprised BMW and they might go back on their word on M3 Hybrid or at least have a very very long think about it.

They already made a V8 Hybrid for the XM and the M5 so they know the cost involved and they will have an idea whether it's worth doing it again as a one off, or just develop EV per EU regulations, get a headstart and maybe get a lead on others.

Time will tell.

ICE performance cars will be here for decades. More used than new, obviously. But performance (and affordable and reliable) EVs are coming. Perhaps not soon enough for my generation. Which is a pity. I wish I could own one.

Most EVs will "perform" better outside of race tracks than ICEs.

I have a M340i and I dread driving the M340i in town. My Nissan Leaf is hands down much better than my other three 300-400hp ICEs in town.

Just get yourself a Kia EV6 Long Range and enjoy it. Seriously. Drives better than my M340i outside of the race track. The EV6 is the only current model EV i would buy.

(Kia EV6 has the best efficiency, enough space, fairly decent "performing" suspension, quiet, great charging, doesn't have stupid harsh wheel/tire setup - sure there are downsides but I can overlook every single one of them when you weigh up the positives - but make sure you upgrade the sound system haha). Never in my life I would have thought that. I used to spit on Kias.

No joke the shared Kia/Hyudai platform that the EV6 and Ioniq5 use, is possibly the best in the EV business.

the Ioniq [s]6[/s]5 suspension is very very squishy and drives terribly [unlike the Kia which is surprisingly decent], and less efficient (power consumption is higher therefore range is lower).

I think you meant Ioniq 5. Anyways, they are built on the same exact platform. Kia is the more sporty of the two brands, suspension of EV6 is tuned more stiff. Ioniq 5 does use power quicker, it has been tested as the quicker car and the shape has a little more drag than EV6.

Besides the Taycan the two have the best dc charging curves on the market. 235kw peak charging speed, curve holds above 200kw to almost 50%.

They will continue to build new models on this platform. Hyundai(Kia) is ahead in the EV game.

here's what the Kia has over the M340i

- instant max power. the moment you touch the pedal the car gets max power. in the M340i you will first need to put in sport plus (or change to the right gear in other modes). then the computer need to build exhaust pressure in the turbo. then you need the turbo needs to get to 3000rpm. then you get max power. Kia is gone by then.

- you can get heating/AC without running the "engine" because there isn't an engine. you can cool or warm up the car before driving away. create summer in the car when it's snowing outside when you get in.

- very quiet. some call it "luxury", some hate it, want engine noise. the upside of quiet means you can hear audio better.

- way more spacious than a 3 series as there is no drivetrain taking up space in the cabin.

gotta get dinner sorry, go test it. might just be what you need.

I’m VERY happy with the E89, and it cost me $36K (plus mods). But if I were on the market for a car, it’d be on my list. EVs have so much to offer!

God damnit. Just a couple months ago it was reported the next gen will be a hybrid. Then there's yesterday's news that ICE Challenger is likely done for.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore...

M fan boys:

M3 gets bigger - crisis!
M3 gets additional 200 lbs - big no no!
No NA V8 - unbelievable!
No manual gearbox - what a joke!
No hydraulic steering - not ok!
Ugly front grille - unacceptable!
Future hybrid / EV drivetrain - I'll just kill myself!

Meanwhile .... "BMW M GmbH posted yet another year of record sales, growing by 13.4 per cent to 163,542 units in 2021. The result means M has more than doubled its yearly sales in the space of five years. We haven’t seen a model-by-model breakdown yet, but BMW has said the new G80 M3 and G82 M4 “performed especially well.”

It's always a big difference between enthusiasts and forums than what the big mass think or want.

Example from interview:

"We've just been talking to customers and the feedback is that 90-95% don't care what direction we take on powertrain. They just want an M car. Yes, some say that if we don't do V8s, they're out but that's okay: I respect that," said van Meel.

I was pretty sure that 90 - 95% of the people I see at the dealer fit that profile, but it's somewhat confirmed. Losers!

OK, just kidding, maybe not losers, I'm sure there are "fine people" in that group. I'm definitely not one of them.

Fun driving, feedback giving, I6 ICE cars = BMW. Big, heavy, numb steering, EV's can be had anywhere. When BMW is in that latter group, what's the point? Well, for the 5 - 10% of us that is. Apparently the other 90 - 95% just want the badge. I never really understood that but c'est la vie I guess.

He can say whatever he wants.

I'm pretty sure 95-99% of customers want to pay for heated seats subscriptions.
