back before the ammopocalypse, I was paying about $2/round for .458. Sometimes less, down to about $1.50 or so.

Now? Fuck if I know. I bought enough ammo back in the before times that if I only shoot occasionally, I'll be fine for another year or so.

Yes, I bought a lot of ammo.

Yes, I know that there is no such thing as 'enough' ammo.

Just checked my email from 2019. I bought a few hundred Underwood .458 ammo when it was $1.65/round.

I still have a lot left. And I even considered selling some ammo in the more popular calibers to make some good cash (5.56, .308, 9mm). But then I came to my senses.

But my ammo supply is certainly lower than I'd like it to be right now.

Just this morning I was thinking at my age and interest in shooting why do I keep the amount of ammo I have. I will never shoot it all. Even with the full auto toys. Even considering selling them. I could pay off both cars (which I could do anyway but instead leave the money in the markets making a killing. ).

And if the revolution comes I'll be useless anyway. Between surgeries and age I could not keep up with walking 20 miles a day and sleeping on the ground.

This is an old picture of the ammo fort but it's pretty much the same now if I gathered it all together. it is excessive for an old man who has lost interest in shooting. Heck, all I need for the rest of my life to defend myself is a good pump 12 gauge and a few glocks.

I work in the industry and supply many of the ammo companies, and it's not all them. Many smaller OEMs do not make a single part of the ammo - they are what we call "assemblers". These are a large part of our OEM business, but they take it in the shorts in years like this as they can't control most of their costs.

Material is (or was, dropped a shade) at an all time high and with the demand right now - there are NO deals. "You want it or not? This is the price - period". Without it we can't make our product and they can't make theirs.

So we increase our prices and they have to pass it along - and do it for EACH component they buy. We have always provided a "to your door" price, but with freight fuel surcharges reaching 50% now - we had to start passing that along as well. And they, like us, have to pay it and again pass it along.

It's terrible. I've been in the industry for 30 years and this is the worst one I have seen yet by a LONG shot. Even after 2.5 years of record shipping - we are still 23 months total backlog still. Are their some "ghost" order in that? You bet, but for now everything run we make goes straight out the door within days and has been like that since March 2020. We could stop shipping for 6 months and still just fill our own inventories back up - let alone our resellers.

Auto handgun rounds have started to hit the wall, so 9mm, 40S&W will be more and more available finally and you are already seeing some "sales". This helps cool the "fear" buying some. But the hard to make stuff, slower sellers, and lower volume stuff (SOCOM, Bushmaster, etc) will be pricey for some time to come for sure. Primers are still an issue in the industry as well - especially large pistol primers, so expect it to stay unpleasant for the rest of 2022 for sure.

Believe me - we are just as tired of it as the consumers!

Your thinking needs to adjust with your age. Someone still needs to be the General And if you have enough ammo to "supply a small army" then at least your home compound can be protected.

Did any California residents receive the letter from the Attorney General about the [purposely done] CCW data breach?

I didn't get a letter, so I guess they don't save those that were not approved

Yeah, I think it's only those who were approved. I had one for a few years prior to joining law enforcement.

For home defense against bears, it's whatever handgun I have until I get to my son's 15th bday rifle build. a .458 Socom. lol. Well his 2021 xmas build was a .350 legend, but I still think I'd grab the .458 for bear defense.
I want a .458 SOCOM!

The .458 and the .350 are both great calibers to have.
Prime example of hunting with an AR platform. The .458 is a great round for whitetail and hogs inside of 150yrds.

Some will tell you the AR is horrible for hunting…….or if you need more than 5 rounds you're a poor hunter.

Meanwhile those are the same folks with high end scopes who still can't consistently hit anything at 100+yrds.

If they are like everyone else - they will not. Price dictated on when we ship -- not when we take the PO. Too many cost increases since then to eat all that.

I think our oldest backorder right now goes back to April 2020. It's insane.

Good news - Atheris has finally started shipping out the rifles from our deployment group purchase a year ago.

Bad news - They only appear to send 5 at a time, and my 6.5 Grendel has not shipped yet.

Also, I'm over that "90 days" claim for electronically submitted can stamp approval window and still waiting on my can stamp to get approved

My bro was hunting boar near Lake Nacimiento. Our Cuz brought his buddy who was making ghosts, and let me bro pull a trigger when they finally showed up at the water hole near dusk.

Good thing my Cuz also had a tag, because my brother hit 2 with a single shot

That was some of the best backstrap I ever ate. We simply put it on the fire, Fire, FIRE!!! No flavoring at all, then passed it around the BBQ for everyone to get a bite.

FM-15 kit arrived. Took awhile to install folding adapter but I got it. lol. Thankfully I had a few unused SBR'd lowers sitting around.

Now to decide which suppressor to use on it.
