Nikki; do you use the camera flash or an off camera flash? When we switched to an off camera flash it was a night and day difference; you can select the level of intensity and also bounce it off stationary objects, so you don't get that washed out "flash in the face" look. Plus you can create some pretty nifty effects in dark rooms:

I don't know, some of them were no flash but when I did use the flash it was the thing that pops up on top, don't know what that is called.

That's the on camera flash, as good as the Rebel line is the on-camera flashes are pieces of shit, they are way to directly focuses, and you have no control over their intensity or direction. We have L-lenses and multiple bodies, and dollor for dollar the best~$400 we spent was on this:

You need an off camera strobe for those shots so you can bounce the light to create a more natural feel.

Examples
I took this shot with the on camera flash. Diesel is over exposed and the background is underexposed. There is a weird haziness on the eyes from the flash. over all a pretty bad photo.

These were taken with an external strobe bounced into a white/black umbrella. Notice how the whole frame is correctly exposed and the shadows are very natural, also we don’t have the weird haze or red eye anymore.

Hope that helps.

Me too but shooting moving objects with a long shutter never turns out good.
