My computer literally blew up!!

It was pretty bad. The CPU was turned off, using the toggle at the power supply, for about four days, because I was away from home. The plug was in a uninterupted power supply (UPS). When I flipped that toggle, wham, flash, buzzz, DEATH. The UPS alarm went off, I guess it trigger some surge thing. Then of course I promptly toggled it off and began to smell that CPU death smell, burnt plastic.

I then decided to go ahead to toggle back on, thinking I just fryed a bug and it will magically start up. Yup and again, buzz, crack, blue flash, this time coming from the power supply itself. I guess it was like a SWAT double kill shot, one in the chest and one in the head.

Any case, I have the Western Digital external back up and I hope I have something in there.

I'm using a new HP laptop on Vista now and hating it, thank you very much. Seriously, I could not figure out how to save on word or excel...nor where my file is located.

Any sympathy is greatly appreciated!

And because we can actually find software and games for PCs.

And to the OP - sorry to hear that . . . any chance of warranty coverage through the UPS protection?

I had my Macbook take a beating the other day, from an old antique lamp with improper insulation on the wiring. I feel your pain. Licky for me though, the computer came out relatively unscathed. The keyboard doesn't illuminate any more, and I think the monitor port got messed up. But at least everything else is working a-ok so far.

The side of the macbook was touching this old brass lamp (I didn't see that the case was touching it), I tried to plug my large monitor into the DVI port and PZZZTTTTT BANG PHWOOOSSSSH. There was all this arcing around the monitor port and over at the edge of the screen. it took me a second to see what was going on. Then I unplugged the lamp and threw that mofo outside.

I am thoroughly impressed that my macbook was able to take a zappin' and keep on mac'n.

Here are pics of the bezel and the lamp:

How about this picture of the designers @ Brawn GP using a mac. F1 isn't that much for hippies.

F1 is not hippie... F1 is king!

But I visit and have lunch a lot @ apple's headquarters. You'll be surprise how many hippies there are.

No offense though... no hate on apple. I own a 3g Iphone that craps up on me all the time. But it's hard to stay mad at it

Am I the only one confused about how in the hell a hardware failure has anything to do with what operating system a computer is running?

Cgnahc, even though something physically burned out on you computer, it might just be a single component that can be replaced. For example, if the damage was isolated to your power supply, you can probably just replace your PSU and get the computer back up.

In terms of your data, that is likely all still intact. Once you fix whatever the issue was or move the hard drives to another computer, you can retrieve your data again. If you have a spare computer lying around and are familiar with computer components, you can figure out what died and replace that piece of hardware. If you're not familiar with working on computers, find a geek friend to help.

Best of luck with the computer issues.

Hey, a real answer...thanks...

Actually I have components to build another computer. I may be forced to build it now to try to retrieve the data in the C:\ drive. Power supply is history. I just don't have any time these days.

I'm just getting up to speed with a new HP HDX laptop. This will be my primary system.

Oh and that logo on the top left corner was the drop down menu to save...

Mac can and will do any well known design programs, but try to get it to run anything more exotic than that....yeah...good luck...
PC is for people who knows how to use their computer. A fresh install of window will always run smoothly and reliably. I have a macbook pro and leopard OS makes me wants to bash my head into a wall every-time i need to adjust a setting, so fucken non-intuitive! It's really designed for people who only know how to type and use the internet, anything more complicated than that...yeah...fucken apple...

What kind of a blanket statement is that. Are you trying to imply that because, for the past 20 years, I have NOT known how to use my computer? I do WAY more than just surf the web and look @ pron on my mac. I do shit like make great sounding movies with mine, and win awards like the Oscar. Which is WAY more complicated than writing an email or typing a word document.

I have been using various flavors of Mac for quite a long time. Yes they have all had their own lttle issues. But, by and large they have performed WAY better for MY FIELD OF WORK than any windows based PC has. Every time I have seen material delivered that was edited on a windows version of ProTools, there has been problems. Corrupted fade files, incorrect permissions, snaps & pops. Or worse, a Music Editor brings in a Nuendo rig based on a PC. Ha!!! Good luck getting that to easily tie in with the rest of the network at the facility you are at.

Just because you like your windows computer doesn't give you the right to make stupid statements like that. A computer is a freakin' TOOL, it's up to the user of the tool to extract the most from it.

My computer got fried a few hours ago. I was adjusting voltages to get my ram to work (MSI NF980-G65 was having an assload of problems to get 4GB of RAM to work) and all of a sudden my computer shut down. I never went beyond what BIOS called "safe" settings either. I played w/ the power switch a few times and i heard a loud pop. I just got an RMA w/ Newegg and hopefully it will go through, for replacements. Thankfully I had an old CPU that was running perfectly before I upgraded.

All my data is still here. I also thought my video card was fried as my monitor was getting no signal, but nope.

I'll do that right after you find me a 3 year old 15" PC laptop (or even a new one for that matter) that can run on a single battery charge for over 4 hours. My MacBook I got March of 2006 still runs for >4 hours on a single charge, it was the main reason I got one, I was sick of having to tote my power cable around.
