Buying the airplane is the cheapest part of the equation.
And if you own an airplane, you will likely have to pay to store it at your favorite airport. A tie-down (outdoors) is cheaper than renting a hangar, but your airplane will need much more maintenance [rust and corrosion]. Hangar rent can be very expensive, but eliminates the outdoor weathering problems plus your airplane is much more secure. Some airports will even allow the hangar tenant to store a car with the airplane (Cobra?).

So a joke:

A couple buys a new sailboat and invites all their friends over to celebrate.

A year later, the couple sells their sailboat and invites all of their friends over to celebrate.

PS: I have my PP. I don't fly anymore, but I sure had fun when I did!

I got my pilot's license when I was 18 and I flew for many years. I don't fly anymore but I think it's awesome that you are thinking about flying and asking the right question so you go into it with your eyes open.

Flying changed the way I look at everything. My sense of responsibility, focus, situational awareness, discipline, all improved when I started flying. You are starting later in life so hopefully you have mastered those things. I suppose you learning to ride a motorcycle provides some of the same foundation.

I'll never forget when I was about a year into flying. I was driving my VW down the freeway in the fast lane going about 70mph when the engine blew. If I hadn't had flight training, I would have pulled over to the fast lane shoulder (they used to have those) and be in a dangerous position. But with flight training, my situational awareness kicked in. I had speed, I knew the next off-ramp, so I put my VW in neutral, put the right blinker on, and used my speed to coast across the lane, exit the off-ramp, turn right at the bottom of the off-ramp and right into a service station and up to the service bay! NEVER would I have had the sense to do that without flying instruction. That's just an example.

I say finish your research, get your questions answered, and get out there and give it a go. As others have said, you want to fly enough to remain proficient and safe. If you love it, you will figure that part out.

Let us know how it goes. All the best!

I started taking lesson a long time ago. I was doing it just for fun, but the instructor I had was set on me getting my license. I'm like dude... I just like learning the fundamentals and coming out here once a week or so and having fun. I have no desire to own a plane or fly anywhere by myself. He didn't seem to understand. Once we got into stalls I was done... I don't even like elevators that go too fast so.

I wouldn't mind getting back into it but too many other projects going on. At least I feel confident that if I come across a cessna 172 during the zombie apocalypse I could start it, take off and gtfo.

Today, my husband accompanied me to LensCrafters to get my eye exam for my new glasses.
He waited for me expecting to have to drive me home after the pupil dilation. I got the optimap thing.. damn it sucked when I kept blinking and had to re_ take the image.
The assistant was great.. we chatted about hobbies while she burned my retinas and I mentioned flying and trying to make sure my eyes were up to this challenge (sun, clouds, far distance).

She mentioned her husband flies and is a member of an all black flying club, and that I should join and get my husband to come along..

I told her that it was pretty cool and asked more about it as she directed me to the eye exam room to be seated and wait for the Dr.

After I was done with the exam, I exited the room and went to the lobby and my husband got up to come over. The assistant was giving me the club details and my husband was standing close by.

Assistant: Sir, are you here for an appointment?
So…. Here is when I just pause.. because, it always happens and it is fun watching the uncomfortable reaction.

Husband: No just here to drive my wife home from her eye exam. He doesn't really snuggle up to me, but just standing there.

Assistant: (looks around us) there's a guy sitting in the chairs waiting. looks back to the exam room where she just seated another guy as I was walking out of my exam room. She looks over at the frames selection area, an elderly couple. She looks back at me.

I just go on about the flying club and ask some of the questions from what I've read here. About plane rentals and sharing for flight hours. She answers my questions, pretty cool club.

Husband: Oh you fly?! The assistant, awkwardly answered as my husband appeared to be just some nosey white guy all up in our convo.

Me: ask my husband it's an all black flying club. …. You want to go check it out?
Assistant: …….processing. …..error…….processing……error

Me: ok, ok, I can't put you through this any longer lol. THIS is my husband..

The look on her face.. loooooooool.
We all laughed…. Haaaard.

Haha too true.

Let's just say the industry has a tendency to attract "special" types of personalities and individuals.

One of my favorite pilot jokes is: "What does the pilot's wife do with her asshole before sex? Answer: Drops him off at the airport.

Thankfully in general aviation the attitudes are much better and pilots are much more humble.

Oh.
I was saying I didn't want to join an all black pilots club in consideration of my husband being white lol
Not a huge deal here. Was nice to the Assistant, all laughs, no harm done..
But, I don't think it's fair for him to see me trot off to an all black pilots club, when if it were reversed and called an all whites pilot club, well………..2020

This isn't fresh from 2020. Came with the territory goes waaay back in this 20 year marriage lol.
Not a big deal.

I've got no problem with the idea of an all black pilots club. Nor do I have a problem with the 99s, which is all female pilot association. Hang out with whoever you want. Birds of a feather...
