Potentially buying an M5 on Friday

I am going to a dealer auction tomorrow looking for an M5, and here are my options.

Black with unknown interior (Listed for auction late tonight)
- 28k miles Car
-Has all maint since 12k documented on the carfax
-It was stolen and listed on carfax but it was inspected and no damage was found (This really bothers me but may be ok....)
-Unknown build date but in service was 2/01/06, so I am guessing it was a late 2005 build or 2006 build.

Black on Black w/39k
-some curbed wheels
-light scratch on the front bumper
-2005 build

Black on Silverstone 46k Miles
-Good condition
-2005 build

All of the specs above are based on the listings the dealer gets and carfax. I will be calling BMW tomorrow to get more detailed service history going off the VIN.

There are also two 2007's with 12k and 15k but my guess is they will go for $40,000 or more and I am trying to stay in the $30,000's if possible.

All of the cars will come with the balance of the factory warranty.

Decisions decisions.......

My gut feeling right now is the 2006 with 28k miles because the likely hood is that it is a 2006 build all of the maintenance is documented, and the miles are low, but the theft recovery is bothering me.

Any feedback will be welcomed

GL man. I bought my 2006 M5 silverstone with every option on the car with 25k miles for $46900 with the 2008 BMW 135i as a trade in. It still has warranty until 4/2010. They wouldn't budge on the price because i was upside down on the 135i and dropped $7500 for the downpayment.

Note: all of the three cars at auction were junk......The two 07's I really wanted sold before the auction even happened, I believe.

WHy did you get rid of your 135i?

Right now I am between a E60 m5 or E90 M3. I may end up with a 2008 BMW 550i M-Sport package if all else fails.

Most people on here and other forums have recommended the M3 to me.......

I want to like the SMG but I am afraid I will only get an M5 if it is in Manual or there is over a year of free factory maint and warranty left.

We traded in the 135i because.....
1) I was going to buy a 2004 911/996 Turbo in the mid $40k's with over 30k miles
2) My wife was getting bored of the 135i even with the JB2 and wanted a 08 CPO M3 sedan with DCT. But we found out that the 08 M3 sedans (Alpine White) with DCT came out at the end of production and the lease returns won't come back until next yr. And plus we have an 08 Civic Hybrid as our everyday/family car.

Most of the M5s are SMG and it is not that bad as i wanted a 6spd. The E90 M3s DCTs are much better and most of them have maint and factory warranty. Either M you go, you won't be disapointed.

Goodluck

I have been debating the 911/ 996 TT as well 2001-2002.

Why did you pick the M5 over the 911?

I like that your wife loves speed as much as you!

I keep going back and forth with the M5 and M3. I really love the M5 and because of all of the issues I have read about the SMG I have tried to stay away from it, but finding a 6 speed manual is not that easy and the overheating transmission is a concern as well.

The funny thing is the prices between 2006/2007 M5's is very close to a 2008 M3 with moderate mileage...

I just feel like I am getting more bells and whistles with the M5, I also have a bad back and I believe that the seats and ride would be more comfortable in the E60........

The debate continues.

And if I cannot decide between the M3 or M5 I may pick up a low mileage 2002-2003 E39 M5.

I guess I cannot lose with any decision, because each car has it's pro's and con's.

I do not want to get suckered into a 550i, 335i....Although an Audi S5 or C63 is tempting as well.

suckered into a 550i? Thats funny, I drove an 06 SMG M5 before I bought my 550i. I hated the SMG and the more I thought about it I did not want to deal with the potential future repair bills. I have two babies or else I would have gotten the M3 sedan.

^I basically meant suckered into a non-m car....

I have a love hate relationship with the SMG. When I test drove an SMG I loved it! It really takes getting use to, but even by the end of my 10 minute test drive I had the hang of it. However future repair bills scare me as well! I may try to find a manual 2007.

I have no babies right now, so I guess you would suggest I pick up an M3 sedan if you were in my position
