Question 2008 E60 LM2 Issues

Hi all,

New to the forum. I recently just purchased a 2008 E60 with a Bad LM2 ( don't know the history behind it ). I ordered a used one from Ebay and installed (on Tuesday) it and all worked good. On Saturday I decided to button up the car and plugged in the OBD2 cable with switch to the right vs the left per instructions and plugged in to laptop when I noticed smoke coming out of the LM2. I had to yank the melting LM2.

The question I now have is could the cable being in the wrong switch position cause the melting of the LM?
I have now place another order to replace the melted one.

Thanks in advance.

I mess that up all the time. Has never been an issue other than the cable not working when it's in the wrong position. There's not enough amperage going through it to melt anything anyway.

Thanks for the reply. Then I am lost to what happened here.

Well if it's 2 in a row, I would imagine that the problem is not with the LM, but some chafed wires grounding out somewhere. Those of course are a PITA to find.

Well the original didn't have the same issue. It just wont work the lights on (if that makes any sense).

The replacement was plugged in for 4 days and tested before this happened. Maybe a really bad cable?

Could a short in a headlight cause this? or will the fuse just go out?
