Would you travel to Maui right now on vacation?
I’m seeing a lot of shaming online about this…
Tourism is the life blood of the Hawaiian economy. At the same time, space seems to be limited and the local Hawaiians need hotels to stay at. Where do you stand on this? |

I wouldn't either. Yes, tourism is the island's life blood but they need some time to recover first.

No point of going there's a crisis happening. Won't be an enjoyable trip.

They are telling tourists to stay away for the foreseeable future.
There are plenty of official sources you can check. If you want to help the best thing is pick a charity and donate. |

No. Way too far to travel to piss people off. They need time and space to recover and don’t necessarily want to go to work right now to cater to tourists. I’d go back later though.

Having been to Hawaii (Oahu, Maui, Lanai, Kauai, and Hawaii Island) many times (most recently in May of this year), I know how limited resources are on the islands and the impact tourists have there. Now is NOT the time to visit Maui. Let the people who are dealing with this tragedy have time to deal with it. There will be a time when it's okay to go back to Maui, but Lahaina and West Maui in general will take many years to get back to any sort of condition that most would even consider as an enjoyable place to vacation. Let’s respect the locals and give them the space they need.

I wouldn't visit there for a while. The only reason I would go there now is if they were wanting people to come and help rebuild.

I stand by my earlier comments. Change your plans and go to a different island. Almost all the airlines are waiving change fees. If you are hellbent on going to Maui, be prepared for a cold reception and lack of "aloha". |

It is one thing if you can get all your money back AND also manage to find another place to stay. Looking at the map though, with no personal knowledge of Maui, I'm not certain how much was burnt - from an acreage perspective it is something like 1% I think, but I don't know how much of Maui is burnt that is actually habitable. Not downplaying the deadliness of the fire or the tragedy of it, seems like it spread very quickly with little time to get out. |

They depend on tourism though. There are a lot more affected by the non tourism dollars which won’t be spent there. If everyone had your attitude a lot of businesses would go under

What I have seen in the media is that Lahaina got hit pretty hard so I'd imagine the Lahaina and Kaanapali areas of Maui would not be too welcoming to tourists at this time. But other areas like Kapalua on the NW side, Hana to the east, or Makena to the south might be better areas to try if someone had to go there since they can't get a refund. If there was a way to connect with a travel agent or other resource who really knows what the vibe is at Maui that would be helpful.

No, why would you go to a place that has just had a disaster? The locals are struggling to find shelter and food and the airport is packed with those trying to escape. Why complicate what is already chaotic? Perhaps a donation to the Red Cross would be more appropriate right now.

Tourism is only 20% of Hawaii's economy. Yes, it's a significant portion, but you can still feed that by visiting other islands. Maui is not that big, so the effects of this disaster and the other fires currently burning on the island will be felt everywhere on Maui.
