Moving to West Coast Help Me
Hey people,
i'll be moving to california/west coast this summer but i have no idea where and how to look for a place to stay. i haven't found a job yet so i will be prepared to go there to stay like 2-3 months and while looking for a job. i have no idea where to start or what to look for or what area. prefer ones which are are safe, easy to get to etc...(obviously) and not too crowded or too country just above average quality. is there like a website where i can start looking for apartments or something? checked some webstie the other day and all apartments are going from atleast 1k/month Thats all for now Thanks

you should go to the california regional forum, there are a lot of nice guys thatll help you out. where is the general area youre looking at moving to? southern car, northern? i live in the san fernando valley (avatar) and i love it. if youre only planning on staying for a few months id definitely suggest looking here. its about 30-40 mintues outside of hollywood (night life, clubs, etc.) and 20-25 minutes from malibu and the beach. and there are some nice places to go in the valley on its own pm me if you have any specfic questions

Why are you moving? No job and no idea on where to live so why are you moving there? Just because?

Way to be vague... could you specify more details, what job you want, what kind of atmosphere your looking for? And you should really narrow down your search into section Norcal/Socal or other territory areas. If your Chinese, which I'm assuming you are since your tag says Taiwan, up in Norcal; Anywhere in the Bay Area is great, but if your looking for like a mini Taiwan, lookup Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, San Mateo areas. In Socal, Rowland Heights, Alhambra, San Gabriel are also very asian. Give us more details and we'll help.
And Yes I would strongly suggest not living in LA, but in surrounding areas if you want to move to socal. Bay Area anywhere is fine, but you find that rent is high in the Cupertino area and in the City especially so find surrounding places. Hope that helps you get started....(wow my grammar sucks...) |

Apartments.com
Rent.com www.rental-living.com (Irvine Area, Irvine Company Apartments) You should really move somewhere close to where you plan working. If you don't know where you are going to work, you should work near those cities that have potential jobs. Basically, you need to tell us what field you plan on working in. The problem with living in LA is, you can live close to somewhere, but it might take quite awhile to get there depending which part of town you are driving in/out of.

How much savings do you have anyways?
I don't want to see you making a thread in 2 months of living here and saying WTF Cali is expensinve, I'm homeless. Then again, I could find a reason to use my favorite smiley.

i am planning to look for a job in LA because of the international companies there. was born in south africa so i guess i have a better advantage because of my language skills (mandarin and english both fluent). i'm looking to work for an english based company that may use my skills in at work.

Move to the areas surrounding LA.
If you're working in LA, don't move more than 30minutes away. The traffic is crazy and you will regret it. Pasadena-area is chill. San Fernando Valley is whatev. Good luck finding a place. Craigslist.com actually has some good listings for rentals. |

Living outside of West LA and having to drive into it would be the worst. A 15 minute drive will be more like an hour during primetime.

you are moving out here. you don't know anyone. you have no set place to live and no job and willing dig into a savings account of 12 to 13k so you can "survive" my advice. come out to CA a few times to check things out. find a spot to live. find a JOB and don't touch that savings! be smart about this. a 1 bedroom apt would put you at about $1k a month. you still have gas, food, utilities, and entertainment. you could easily be throwing away half your savings in a few months. rent is not cheap and living out of a hotel and eating out everyday isn't either.
