Sword Art Online The Movie
Looks like various theaters (AMC and Regal) will be screening this movie on March 9th. Anyone planning on watching it?

I would be interested in checking out the move, but would I have to already familiar with the characters/plot prior to seeing this movie...?

I'm under the impression that you might need to be at least familiar with the characters. The second season of Sword Art made references to the first season so I think it might be safe to assume the same for the movie.

I would if it was close... I loved SAO, although I enjoyed the first season a lot more than the second.

Saw it yesterday. The showing was completely sold out and there were people sitting in the aisles. Definitely a lot of fans as there was cheering every time familiar characters showed up.
If you've seen the series, it follows up after season 2. If you haven't seen the TV series, you can probably still understand the movie but you'll not get who's who when a lot of the characters show up with no introduction and there's no explanation to references to the TV series. The anime style is very much the same as the TV series but actual quality of the animation is really not any better than the TV series. I was a little disappointed there wasn't any extra detail or smoothness in the animation. That said, the quality of the TV series was pretty high so you're not missing much here. Story is pretty good. If you liked the mystery solving and the monster battles of the TV series, it's pretty much what you'll get. Also, it continues the romantic relationship of Asuna and Kirito. The main plot involving AR and the Ordinal Scale game most people will get as they explain it as they go. Overall, it's pretty good but only if you've seen the TV series. New people will get the story but be lost on the characters and background - it won't be as enjoyable for them. Oh, and stay until the VERY END. They drop an easter egg at the end of the credits like a Marvel movie.
