Absolutely. I have a 97 4Runner that I purchased for $3000 5 years ago. It used to be my daily, but now I just use it to haul my dogs, trash or parts around. Will eventually replace with a 14+ Toyota Tundra crewcab, and will keep that as a forever car.

The X2 is the actual daily, and the other ones are for fun:

To those that argue against having a beater car, it just depends on your circumstances. I'm pretty sure you would not want my lab and golden retriever after they've rolled around in mud at the dog park.

The E90 M3 was my beater/only car and I loved driving it all of the time...until I got in too much trouble. Then I got a Eurovan. It's much better for all of the rock climbing and camping I do. It just needs a poptop and a better drivetrain to be perfect.

Also, after driving the M3 full time for years it feels quite normal. After driving the van for a while the M3 feels like a damn supercar!

Yup, 99 Lexus GS400. Perhaps too much hp and too low mpg for a beater, but it won't die! Only has 130K miles on chassis and engine, so it will live for quite a long time.

The 1uz is almost impervious to death by natural causes.

But there are a bunch of small problems... AC doesn't work; ball joints, engine mounts, and bunch of bushings should be replaced. And there is this P0171 CEL that pops up every now and then that slightly annoyed me.

It is still an awesome car, but it will be perfect if I throw in $2K to fix all these and more for a new paint job (people in my neighborhood can't drive).

Yup. I had an SC400 several years ago in college as my project car. Had to fix and/or upgrade every issue you listed, and did a manual conversion. I even had the ECU capacitor failure twice, so I built a Megasquirt 3X ecu for it. I think I was the first person to run a 1uz on Megasquirt with completely stock ignition and injection systems actually. After all of that work (which probably cost me less than a set of nice M3 coilovers in total) the car was great haha.

This is the first time I heard of a 1uz 5speed swap, it is usually the 2jz-gte swap to replicate other market's Aristo or Soarer.

Now that I think about it, I had quite a few more problems actually. Faulty maf, window switch, pcv valve, and starter. I also had to replace the alternator cause Toyota engineers thought it was a good idea to put it right under the weakly built power steering pump. Don't get me wrong, the core of the 1uz is beyond amazing, just everything else not being state of the art.

My M coupe was my beater until recently, but the weather pushed me to pick up a B8.5 S4. With a few mods it's pretty good fun but I can't wait to take the Z4 out again.

Going low pro. big one (sort of no haters)

Driving around in an old dusty civic is like being invisible. I dont have a beater anymore

No beater really. My DD is my 340....that being said my business partner and I leased a new Kia Soul since we do a lot of driving/hwy miles so good mpg and low lease cost was nice. It’s slower than a snail in tar but it gets the job done

For sure.

lmao right. You should see how dirty my DD is. The M3 and Exige you can eat off of they are so clean.

What happened to the beater? Literally got beat up? lol

Twice.

I had a purple EK civic hatchback.

I had to street park it when i was living in Glendale for a bit. Someone sideswiped the shit out of it. No full coverage so i got it repaired on the cheap since i had no other car.

Then in central LA it got side swiped again when street parked. Since i already had my garaged 135 at the time, i just sold it for basically scrap.

If I can drive the 340 I will, which usually is about 360 days a year. When it can't go in the snow even with snow tires, my wife's daily 2018 F150 4x4 comes in.

No doubt. My girlfriend used to have an oxygen blue Mini Cooper with black roof and hood stripes. Great looking and fun little car, but the only one in the area with that combo. It developed scoring in a couple cylinders so she now drives a silver Chevy Cruze, and complains that I now rarely wave if pass each other...

Hahaha the power steering fluid on the alternator! I actually built a little shield to put over the alternator for the inevitable leakage! Yea there weren't too many manual 1uz swaps, since it required a custom adapter plate and hydraulics for whichever manual trans was used. We loved V8s though. Still do.

I may put a shield there before replacing the pump, hopefully my alternator won't go out any time soon.

I agree the V8 is pretty awesome on these cars. Good low end torque, the throttle is still driven by wire, it is a good cruiser.

We have a 4-door Jeep for carrying the dogs in mostly and for going up to the mountains or out to hikes. But I could easily daily the M2. I moved across country with a lab in a Corvette.

It sure is. Previous owner of the house built it himself (retired marine). Funnily enough, he used it for wood working and couldn't care less about cars. My friends and I cut the openings in between the bays ourselves
