Michelin Sport AS $ vs Continental DWS 06 on M550ix

So I am nearing end of life on my Michelin Pilot Sport 3 ZPs which came on my 2019 M550ix. This is my daily driver and in my area we are below 45 degrees more days than not between late Nov and early March. The DMV Washington DC area.

I am looking at going to all season ultra performance tires mainly for the cold temps vs lots of snow driving. I am considering the Sport AS 4s vs the Conti DWS 06.

Lots of spirted on the road driving but no tracking. I don't throw the 550ix around that much. The wife has a 2018 M3 so which wears summers and then winters.

I would love to hear peoples thoughts on these 2 options.

Our 2022 G30 540i m-sport has the Conti DWS because those are what it came with. The handling is fine and the noise isn't bad, but the ride is choppy. I'll be going with the go-flat A/S 4s on this car once I have about 10k miles on the Conti's. I have the A/S 4s (and 3s) on a few other cars in the family, all non-runflat. Their handling is good, they are very quiet, and ride better than the DWS. Just my opinion that not everyone agrees with.

Thanks for the comments. I am leaning towards the A/S 4s but they are currently out of stock and Michelin seems to be having production issues.

I switched to the dws06 plus tires on 20 inch wheels and find them to be a great ride. I have conti extremes on my 15 Z06 so I may be partial to Conti tires.

I got the continental DWS06 plus as well and find them really well. Low road noise and a smooth ride for me.

Keep calling around. I recently bought a set for one of my e92's. Was told I would have to wait a month by Tire Rack, but the tires showed up on my doorstep about a week later. This was early October.

OP: I ran PS4s on the M340i I had for 3 years, and have the Conti DWS06s on my current M550i. I actually ended up with the Contis on the new car because I couldn't find the PS4s in stock anywhere for weeks, and couldn't wait. The PS4s seemed to be much stickier and grippier than the DWS06s, but it's apples to oranges since the 5er is a totally different car and I'm not sure what portion of the differences are attributed to the tires vs the vehicle. I'm content with the Contis though, and don't plan to sling the 5er around the corners like I did the 3er.

In the DC metro area, I'd be tempted to go plus 0 (up the aspect ratio 1 size) to handle the "fine" roads around there. There were killer potholes on the GW parkway and a few other roads when I lived in Alexandria, VA.

While increasing the aspect ratio provides more protection to tires and rims, it's not the "cool" thing to do these days. Frankly, I wish we'd end this race to bigger and bigger wheels and less tire. I replaced the 19" wheels and run flats on my F10 with 17" wheels and higher aspect tires and the results were amazing. Underneath those rock-hard OE run flats exists a great BMW suspension.

Found the Michelins at Discount Tire. It is odd because they own Tirerack now. The sales rep said they have good availability. Maybe they have not integrated inventory. I would think they would have by now. They are going on the car today.

Please give us updates on your opinions of the tires.

After owning multiple sets of Michelins and Continentals, I would choose the Michelins over the Continentals due to better construction of the Michelins. I have yet to own a set of Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4, but I have owned the DWS 06 Plus and the Continentals do not handle as well as other Michelins that I have had. The car appears to roll through the corners that I believe is due to a softer sidewall. Continentals are not as tough when it comes to hitting irregularities in the road such as potholes and are more prone to tire failure. I had 9 bubbles inside one of my Continentals. The Michelins also hold air extremely well; thus less time spent adjusting tire pressure.

So far I am liking them. I have not put a lot of miles on them yet but they are definitely not as stiff a ride as the OEM runflats. Hopefully in the next week or two I can take the car out for an extended drive.

I have had DWSs in the past and really consider them a nice higher end touring tire vs a ultra high performance AS. They are good tires but if you push you car you notice the soft side wall as you noted. Your post pretty much sums up why I went with the Michelins.

I'm also in the DMV and debating what to put on my M550 to replace the RunOnFlat Goodyear tires that came with the car. What are your thoughts on the Michelin tires? To confirm, you went with the All Season 4, not the PS4S, correct?

Yes I went with the AS4. All Season 4 Non-run flats. They are a solid compromise. At this point I am happier with them then I had been in the past on the DW06s on other cars like my D3 Audi A8L.

The AS4 is a bit more of a performance AS where I feel the DW06 is a high performance touring tire. Now that said they are not as good as the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Run Flats which came on my car in temps above 55+. They do not have the grip of a summer tire but what you are giving up on a daily basis vs convivence is worth it.

In the DMV we only get 2-3 snow storms of any significance but it is consistently under 50 degrees on most days from mid Dec to March. When we get snow most of the time it does not stay around more than a day or 2. I also have a truck I can use if it gets really bad. So snow performance was not the driving factor. I just did not trust the summers in the morning and at night when the temps are 30 and under.

Also a lot will depend on how you drive the car and your expectations. For the wife's M3 Comp we went with a set of winter tires because the way she drives the M3 in warm weather it is best to have the summer rubber and it is almost impossible to find AS that work with the M3s offset. I did not want to breakdown the tires 2 times a year and found a good local deal on a used winter set. IMHO At this point I am happy with my choice for the M550. If I could get a set of winter wheels at a great price I might switch back but for now I am good to go.
