I'm sorry, but did you really just ask what a pre-med/med student will be in 5 years?

I was at a Fourth of July party this night and spoke with a dermatologist. The dude easily pulls in seven figures.

Either dropped out and depressed, or in med school (if pre-med) or residency (if med student) and depressed.

yeah but im just sayin, there's so many other ways to make much more money that requires less time and skill. opportunity cost is a bitch, can bring alot of regrets down the line. make sure you want to do what your doing op. if its for the money then be out... good luck

Don't forget that with the money you'll be making you can invest them wisely, through a broker/firm mostly, and they can grow. If you start out investing with a lot of money you can really grow them at a great rate. But keep in mind that the earlier you start the better! It's all about compounding!

Medicine is like running a small business...people in same field can make 100K or 1000000...it all depends on if you own the technical side...this is what they dont teach you in medical school.

Ya see, if you depend on professional fees only(traditional), you will be lucky to make 250K-350K, unless you are a specialized surgeon...even general surgeons dont make that much...but ortho/neurosurgery pays well.

But there are alot of other fields where you can be half doctor and half business owner...you gotta ask yourself, why do so many radiologists own there own radiology centers?...why do so many oncologists own there own infusion and radiation oncology centers?...why do surgeons like to open up ambulatory surgery centers?...blah blah blah.???....I will tell you something very important but most on here wont appreciate it...but anyone that actually practices medicine will understand the value of this secret that nobody will tell you in med school.

In the past , professional services billed(normal doctor bill) use be 1:1 with the technical charges(hospital charges)...now the pro:technical ratio is 1:5!!!!....never forget this!...that is why everyone and their grandmother is trying to lock up technical fees...but is this easy?...no!...you have to have the patient flows without pissing off the hospital to battle you by hiring their own specialists to battle you....you open up a center and battle with the hospital and if your clientele(referring physicians) sticks with you, you will be a very rich man...you wont be trolling on M3 boards, you will troll the F and P boards...only the docs making professional fees only will be trolling BMW boards.....

I speak truth!.

Hey Bahn,

I have an opinion on everything dont I?.......the question is, am I full of it or do I speak truth hehe.

Forgot to add, medicine is and always will be a good field...people are living longer and they will get every disease you can possibly think of...growth fields are medicine and energy field...and tech....paper pushers and finance middlemen will get squeezed in the future imho.

Obamacare huh?...he cant be president forever...your career will last alot longer than Obama's policies...but given that the the worlds liquid net worth is 100T and the worlds real estate worth is 75T and our obligations for Medicare over next 30-40 yrs is 80-100T, somethings gotta give huh?.....

I can think of alot of jobs paying 100-200K without doctorate degree, but Im not going to list them here cause I did that in the past and that Persian bastard policing these boards called me a "know it all", so i will keep quiet hehe.....

Derms, Ortho, Radiology, Cardio... they are all pulling in SERIOUS money.

Lots of radiologists and derms making 7 figures.

I am done my first 2 years of med school and about to start preparing for USMLE step 1... (although e90post will probably make me fail the exam)... it is one of the most BRUTAL and PAINFUL processes you will ever go through.

Med school isn't all about money, there's more to medicine then money.

If you are after money... come to Canada... move to an Indian or Asian populated area... and enjoy 350k working 5-6 hours a day 4 days a week as a FAMILY PHYSICIAN....

My parents own a hospitalst business and have 30 physicians working for them. I remember my entire childhood was nothing but business as this was the time when they were building their business. And there were months where I would see my dad for an hour or two a day because he was working 24/7 for three months at a time. He didn't have anyone working with him so he was always on call. If you start up your own small physician group be prepared to constantly be with a pager and have no time for anything but tending to your business, patients and referral doctors. It's grueling work man.

So what is the point of doing that?

Does missing out on your children growin up etc. make the money and constant headaches worth it?

Does the X5M make up for it?

Just stuff I wonder about, I had a similar childhood.

If you are smart, and you get into a good specialty, you will prosper
Becoming a general practitioner sucks
Premed major is stupid. Bio, biochem, orgo, etc. At least its a major that can lead to something if you dont get into medical school
1st 2 years is depressing

How do you think a family physician up here is going to make 350K working like that? A general surgeon up here may make that (working a lot harder than what you've said), but no way a family physician is making that. Have you not got the latest salary guides for the medical practice in Canada? Its pretty interesting.

No, if you want to make money as a doctor, the States is where its at. However, you'll face a higher risk of litigation down there too...bit of a tradeoff.

Don't let salary guides fool you. Speak to a doctor with an asian/indian background with a matching immigrant based patient population and you will be mind boggled at the amount of money they net. I know MANY of these doctors at a personal level and the amount of money they make for a family physician is stupidly ridiculous. Our surgeons are barely making the kind of money these guys are pulling in.

I know more doctors then I can count on my hands and toes, whether it be friends, family, neighbours and classmates.

OH and also, why do you think the salary cap was lifted? Physicians were hitting the cap VERY easily and taking half the year off due to it so they had to get rid of it.

Malpractice lawsuits are the worst here though. Patients sue for the dumbest shit and even if they don't win they don't have much to pay. If Obamacare was supposed to be good reform they would have addressed these suits. But no, all the lawyers would have gotten on Obama's ass so that was left out. My hopes are it gets repealed, or at least found unconstitutional in the supreme court.
