Special treatment due to your watch

I stumbled upon this article the other day about receiving special treatment due to the watch you are wearing. Have any of you ever received any special or different treatment based on your watch?

Yup, you best not even try to set foot in my estate unless you are rocking a Patek Philippe time piece of some kind. And yes we fancy folks call them time pieces. Watches is what you peasants wear so you know when to come out of your servant huts and to begin toiling in our fields. And our time pieces cost more than the dingy little dwellings you call home.

ive found that I tend to get more respect if Im wearing a nice watch. Im relatively young for my profession, and the majority of the people i deal with are 1.5-2+ times my age. Ive noticed that wearing an OK watch never did much, but once I started wearing Omegas, Panerai and the occasional Tag, it was almost like they think to themselves "This guy seems to be doing pretty well for himself, lets listen to him".

Most recently had a meeting with a client who was wearing a White Gold Daytona, but I kept seeing him glance at my PAM 164. This guy has been notoriously tough to deal with in the past, and this was my 1st meeting with him, and when I told everyone that he let me talk through items, and explain why we would/would not do things, they couldnt believe it.

I find it can sometimes lead to the opposite reaction from most people - mostly non watch enthusiasts.

People think how come you can afford something like that and think you're some kind of elitist prick. Not to mention, it can make you a theft target. I'm always careful of letting people see what I'm wearing.

It wouldn't surprise me if the article was intended as some indirect marketing. It also makes me curious on how many people would even be interested in renting a watch. Is their target market posers pretending to be something they're not, or individuals with the means to buy these watches who want to give a watch some "wrist time" to see if they like it?

Special treatment due to watch?

Isnt this really the same/similar question posed elsewhere about people behaving like assholes towards BMW drivers?

Depends on your audience eh?

Some people are going to react positively to you being well dressed with a tasteful watch and driving a BMW

Others will react negatively to one or more of the above........

I guess my point is...."When in Rome....." you know how the rest goes.......which is why I have decent clothes and a decent (not extravagant) car and carharts and a truck......I also have a NEED for a truck but thats a different story......

I sort of get it. But i think its a completely ridiculous idea, and anybody who is decently smart would figure out that if they really wanted a watch, they could finance it for the same price that these rental watches are...

For instance, a $5k breitling is leased or "rented" for around 300-400 a month. Should you just buy the watch, it could theoretically be financed for 24 months at 0% financing (lots of jewelers do this now) for $208/month.... AND youre left with an asset in the end.

I really hope people dont rent watches, but then again, people rent TVs, couches, appliances, etc. so im sure people rent watches too. Targetting the lower income markets with the lure of the upper income luxuries at an "affordable" monthly payment.

Renting/leasing rarely works out in your favor.

And there are plenty of dumbasses that do it. If you need to rent a 50in TV then that is a sign your ass needs to get a job of seek better employment.

It reminds me of the ads I used to see for rent-to-own wheels for those who wanted 'dubs' but couldn't afford them.

I would love to be able to rent a watch for a month to "try it out" before committing. But only a month. A better business model would be rent + rent to own
