Coming out of E60 M5 thinking of F30 335i

or a 535i...

I have to admit, I like the interior of the 5 better as it just feels pricier and the ambient lighting is nice...but its slooowwww....and coming from always having faster cars I'm finding it hard to get a slower car then miss the power...

But, before I get the newer 5 what can one do to a 335i to turn that little whipper into a full on snapper...?

Obviously chip/tune/exhaust etc...but how much does that run?

Anyone have a 335i that can hang with the M5's or C63's?

It would be nice to have some semblance of the best of both worlds...close to performance as the big fellas but twice the gas mileage.

Would this new car replace the E60 or supplement it?

IMO, that M5 is a special car that I would not consider a 335I or 535I as ideal replacements.

I've left a CLS55 AMG behind from a standstill and like to think I can keep up with a C63

Also achieved 6.9L/100km on the highway, not bad at all!

and LOVE the fact that's it's wicked gas mileage.

What about chipping it or something like that? I heard this place is alright...anyone have this done?

Haha, that CLS must not have been trying I've driven a CLS 55, and have owned a CLS 63, and those cars are just in a different league than any F30.

I'd like to think I could keep up with a C63 also as I have a 35i w/PPK too. Unfortunately, it's simply not true. The C63 has over a 100 hp advantage that runs low 12's.

Check out the N55 technical forum. There you'll find the most popular tunes available. There is a set up that can get you to C63 levels of performance for not much money. F10 M5 levels? That'll take some Herculean doing.

You drive an M5 and worry about gas?

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but the 335i is no m5. Not even an m3.

If you crave power and get your thrills from speed, do yourself a favor and get another M or AMG. The 335i is 'just' an awesome daily driver. Speed demon, it is not.

Others will come here and post their fanboi stories of smoking M cars or street racing GTRs. Please. Take it with a grain of salt.

It has wicked gas mileage ... Because it's not as fast as an M5.

Of course...agreed on all points.

The real question is 3 fold, can I get the awesome daily driver up to the likes of an M/AMG with mods while still retaining the gas mileage to some degree. I know enough to know that question has many answers...hence why I simply went with a v10. But nowadays with these turbo motors getting insane gas mileage, I'm simply looking for a happy medium...to settle myself into a car that doesn't eat gas while idling in traffic nor doesn't give me that holy shit I'm going to die feeling that I at times in my life ....need.

I personally think its possible...

Definitely possible. That would be the f80 M3. Pretty much fits the bill here. i6 gas mileage, v8 performance.

MPK + MPE was ~3000$ installed. On MY2014,5 its a $2500 package.

I may have to opt for that Dinan tune now, but I reckon it still wouldn't be enough.

No way the 335i will get 26 mpg by the time you're done molesting it for more power.

Edit: I average 22/23 mpg on my bone stock 335i (6mt). Keep that in mind.

Also the M3 in this comparo is the old NA 4 liter v8. The new one should average 19/20.

It won't. 364 hp (electronic waste gate). When it's released, stage 2 won't be close to the C63's 451 hp either. Dinan does give a good amount of torque increase, though. So I could see keeping up with the AMG on a 0-60 run but after that, he'll walk away and then slowly jog away.

I'd save and wait for a used f10 M5 especially since they started in the 2012 model year. Everything else but the F80 M3 will be underwhelming in one way or another.

Good luck op!
