My Time with the 7th Gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class (S350d V223)

Hello everyone, I got the opportunity to spend some days with the All New 7th Gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Last year India got a imported (CBU) limited run S400d, however soon after the production was shifted to India. The model tested was the locally assembled in India (SKD) unit & here are my impressions;

Likes;

- Good Looks (Exteriors & Interiors both complement each other to up the desirability quotient)
- Suspension Tuning. (Very Comfortable Ride, the real party trick for the S Class is the Air Suspension)
- Engine & Gearbox Combo (I Always prefer a Diesel engine in a large car and this new age OM656 diesel though detuned in the 350d is still a charm)
- Technological Marvel (This 7th Gen. S-Class is a tech fest, the touch screens are a charm & looks better in real life usage than in pics. Also loved the camera quality & park assistance options)

Dislikes;

- Missing Features (HUD, Front Cooled & Massage Seats)
- Price (Considerably pricier than the outgoing V222 S Class)
- Could be more Spacious (The emphasis seems to be more on Comfort than Space IMO, also the boot space is not that generous)
- Tyre Size & Rim Design (I personally dislike the rim design & 255/45 R19 is a bit skinny for the segment to be honest as even the 530d has a 275 rear tyre)

Platform ?

Many years ago Mercedes had almost 9 platforms to make thier cars with. But due to cost reductions and smart modular platforms being available Mercedes has standardised their platform range for its Internal Combustion Cars into 4 categories out of which this Gen S Class belongs to the The 2nd gen of the MRA i.e. MRA II Platform. In fact, infact all standard RWD Mercedes models (Their 4Matic counterparts included) & even the yet to launch all new C Class will be based ride the MRA II Architecture. Also this platform spawns totally 3 S-Class variations, namely the W223 (Standard Wheel Base) Z223 (Maybach Version) and the V223 (The LWB) which the Indian variants are (CBU's included)

Engine/Gearbox;

The engine this S350d gets is the OM656 Diesel. Its a detuned version of the 400d CBU car hence its called the 350d however its still the new age 6 cylinder. I specify new age because the previous Mercedes Diesels were V6's this however is a Straight 6, and this is not the 1st time im driving this engine, this same engine with the same tune i experienced in the G350d and the higher tune i drove in the GLS 400d. If i had to describe this detuned OM656 engine in the S Class, in one word then that word would be "IDEAL". 600 NM is enough to make this S Class a proper cruiser.

It's Also important to note this was a RWD model (Not 4Matic AWD) I personally prefer the RWD as its surely more engaging and also because you shed weight this will handle better and also be more economical. Also as i said it has enough power to light up the traction control light even in comfort mode. The gearbox is the 9G tronic unit. The shift quality remains sublime and not much confusion in picking the right gear in sport mode too, but the only negative i observed is during downshifting 2 gears at a time the gearbox is slow to react. Overall i'd say ive driven this S Class hard & fast in Sport+ Mode & but ive also driven it in a slow paced relaxed manner in Comfort Mode & no prizes to guess what driving style I & Most of us would prefer.

Suspension;

If the S in the S-Class had to mean anything other than SonderKlasse then it could very well be also called the " Suspension Class ". The ride quality stands out the most even after this SKD version misses out on the the E-ABC (E-Active Body Control) & just with the regular Air Suspension it is compliant enough. Another contributor to the ride quality are the downsized wheels as this press car came specced with 19"ers (255/45 R19). But the tyre size could have been wider as it feels a bit undertyred for the segment and the price. Coming to the handling, its important to again discuss the absence of the 4Matic system which contributes to the weight reduction and makes the S Class feel a bit agile and tail happy. BUT the essence of driving the S Class has always been comfort and that it does but for those occasional sprints when you engage the Sport + Mode the Steering & Suspension does firm up to keep up with the Drivers aggressive mood. The Braking is also very good for the weight (Approx. 1.96 MT) of the car & boosts confidence. Comprehensively the S Class feels like a Yatch wafting over calm waters & even if the waters get choppy the ride of the S Class remains largely unaffected.

Exterior/Interior;

The detailing, fit & finish of the S-Class is magnificent. Inside or outside, the finish and fit of all panels, trims and paint are without fault, Pronouncing the obvious fact that this is Stuttgart's Flagship;

While hugely impressive as a car, much of the mission for this gen S-class is the showcase of new technology. Over the past 6 generations the S-Class has always been Future-Proof this continues in the 7th Generation as well, as the cockpit is dominated by 2 large screens and makes you feel you are in an Alien spacecraft. When the 1st pictures of this Gen S-Class came out i thought these screen were an overkill and will be a distraction however in flesh it works.

The current software too has a great smoothness to it & provides the right amount of user friendliness. Another area of innovation is the sound insulation, where Mercedes seems to have for the first time used an acoustic foam in key parts of the body, which is fitted early in production line and then expands in the oven during cathodic dip painting overall making this S-Class cut off from the real world outside.

As the test car was a LWB (hence "V" 223) the back seat felt like a Revitalisation Package. The Ambient Lighting, Massage Seats, Infotainment and also the music system everything is designed to remind the owner that what a great decision he's made by making the buy decision of the S Class. However i have a quick Negative - The seat comfort is emphasised more than the space as i personally feel the space department might be reserved for the longer Maybach.

Miscellaneous Observation & Thoughts;

- The evolution into "MRA II" comes with integral steering, suspension with new aluminum elements and the option of the E-Active Body Control adaptation.
- OM656 introduces stepped-bowl combustion process, 2 Stage Turbocharging & use of CAMTRONIC variable valve-lift control.
- The exact spec. of the 350d is 286HP & 600 NM, the torque is most felt between 1200 - 3600 rpm.
- Front Seats are Heated but not cooled (Only the Rear Seats get cooling function)
- Hi-Res Digital LED Headlamps have a fantastic throw & illumination.
- Rear Seats Can recline upto 43.5 Degrees.
- The car drops 0.7 Inches (Approx 18mm) in Sport+ Mode.
- Ground clearance is largely not an issue but you can't be careless.
- The MBUX Software this Gen. S-Class uses is the latest NTG7 version.
- I Think the same steering wheel is available on the E-Class(facelift), if its True, then its not a good thing.
- Mercedes is particularly proud of the ultra-low drag coefficient (0.22) boosting efficiency and improving refinement for this 7th Gen.
- The SKD unit gets Burmester 3D surround sound system (Total output: 710 Watts) along with sophisticated vehicle noise compensation (VNC) adjusting music & sound dynamically to driving conditions.
- Turn indicators sound too seems to be engineered to be mellow & non obtrusive.
- The Seat Adjustment button feel is somewhere in the middle of being a click and being touch based i think the engineer lost himself here.
- Though this car did not have the rear wheel steering (Party trick for this gen S-Class) the turning radius while taking U-Turns was not much of a problem. I believe the 4Matic AWD has a poor turning radius (without rear wheel steering) and the rear wheel steering compensates that, the SKD being a RWD doesn't inherent a poor turning radius hence that feature wasn't missed.

Great review. Many of your thoughts echo mine. I've had my S-Class for two months now and its been a fantastic cruiser, superb comfort and interior and a great drive with an incredibly smooth engine (surprisingly efficient too!).

The fingerprints all over that main touchscreen would drive me nuts.

I Agree, with the elimination of major buttons, knobs the touchscreen leaves a lot of finger prints and on those sunny days its very visible (not a problem at night).

One trick I use for the touchscreen to eliminate fingerprints is the steering wheel controls on the right side can also be used for the main infotainment system controlling almost everything except for the HVAC.
