Active Side Collision

When I think about finding the setting that will turn this off, I don't bother as in my mind.....maybe one day this will pay off.

However, when Active Side Collision triggers unexpectedly, it's always at the wrong time. 1st time I experienced it was at 40-50 mph , in the middle line of 3 lanes, just speeding to go past 2 tractor trailers fore left and right of me..

The 2nd incident was just simply taking a turn at decent speed and it simply sensing the median, which was a bit higher . There wasn't a car to the right of me.

Yesterday, just a lazy Sunday driving and I'm just coming down fast in the middle lane, to get past a left lane loafer and a car to the right that was parallel.

Right now, I have lane keep asssist and there other intervention turned off. Everything else, backup stop, etc all turned on but it's just too -smart- for my driving habits.

FWIW, in Germany, as I understand it, it's illegal to pass on the right...that might be part of the reason why the logic is written the way it is. They take passing as a serious requirement, as there may be someone coming up behind you that is literally going 100mph faster than you, so passing can be problematic, but not much, if everyone is following the rules (the only time I had issues driving in Germany was during the summer when there were lots of tourists on the road).

On one trip, on an interstate, around a curve, I was in the left lane passing a semitrailer and it started to drift into my lane...the X5 recognized that on its own, and moved over to avoid the potential impact.

I got the side collision warning for the first time today, I didnt know what it meant, had to look it up. Kinda alarming if you dont know what it is.

I had an M850i which had an issue where false side collision alerts would routinely happen and always from the right side. Even when no other vehicles were around me. This resulted in the vehicle swerving left on its own at any random time. It used to happen once a week and then by spring 2023 it was happening at least once a day. I tried for months to get this issue fixed... Ultimately BMW deemed it wasn't a safety issue or fault, but rather just a limitation of the system and would not do anything.

Rather than deal with it (and other issues) further I just traded it back to the dealership. Sooner or later I was thinking the system was going to swerve me into oncoming traffic or into a concrete boulevard. I still can't believe they didn't think it was a safety issue.

Isn’t it also illegal in the U.S., and we are mostly just law breakers?

No, it all depends on the state and situation. Not sure of any that have it illegal.

Can this Active Side Collision assist be disabled if you find too annoying?

Florida just passed a law for this...not sure when it becomes effective.

The radars that detect this do not have very long effective range, so when it goes off, it's close.

Nothing changed as far as I know. It has always been legal to pass on the right in Florida

Now that this OP has got Bumped, I'm going to check my settings. I believe I have it turned off - but I cannot a time where I've had any more crazy freakouts.

When I initially had the OP events, I recall passing by things *expecting* that Active Side would do something crazy and unwarranted.

Taking effect January 1, 2025, it will become illegal to 'ride' the left lane except when passing someone in FL and requiring returning right after passing, and the law already calls for driving on the right except when passing with few exceptions (like preparing for a left turn). Now, it's not often enforced. This will apply on multilane roads with a speed limit of 65mph or more.

So, if you can't be in the left lane unless passing, that sort of forces you to not pass on the right.

The 'move over' law now adds in essentially any stopped vehicle, not just emergency or maintenance or construction vehicles with lights on.

Good luck enforcing that law here.. the same as using the phone while driving.

No, that is not that case. Passing on the right will still be legal in Florida.

I don't make the laws, or enforce them...just reporting that there is a change.

Except there has not been a change to whether passing on the right is legal or not. It has been legal since at least 1997 (as old as the online statutes are) and will continue to be so.

You will still have people riding the left lane and say it's ok because they're already going the speed limit and going faster, means you are speeding and breaking the law. Apparently these people are there to enforce speed limits for all of us.

The law that takes effect next year in Florida prohibits driving in the left lane except when passing, requiring you to return to the right once that as occurred. Now, as to enforcement, that's a totally different issue.

So far, it's passed the FL senate, and is scheduled to be taken up in the house.

And has nothing to do with passing on the right.
