I need a little help...im taking a test next week to get into the police department in my area and i have to take a physical test... one of the tests is a 1.5 mile run in under 16.5 minutes... i am in pretty good shape but im not too good at running...what is the average time it takes people to run a mile? post up ur times cause the more people i hear from the more ill understand my chances of doing well on this portion of the test.. thanks a lot

In ROTC we used to have to run 2.0 miles in under 15:50 so 1.5 miles in under 16.5 minutes should be a cake-walk.
I would say average mile time for a male in kinda blah shape should be about 7:30-8:00

I should average about 20min for 1.5 miles.
Oh, that's not including my 5 min break after half a mile point. |

If you are of African decent, you could really finish a 10K race under 16.5 minutes

You'll be fine. Just jog the whole way. Don't stop. You'll be at 11 or 12 minutes barely trying.
And being in good shape should help you too.

Aim for an 8-9 mile pace for the first mile. The day prior, go for an easy jog. Not much, not fast, just an easy jog, get your heart rate above 130 for at least 15 minutes. Then eat something with plenty of complex carbs, pasta preferred. Enjoy a shot of scotch before you go to bed if you're worried about stressing out. If you don't run much you're not going to have terrific stamina so drink a red bull 20 minutes prior to your timed event for the caffeine and make sure you pee. Don't drink coffee unless you get up early enough to shit before the run. Nothing worse than having to drop a load while on the chalk waiting for the gun.

You should be fine. 10min/mile pace and your golden
I ran a 21:20 5k with a few months of training (that's like a 6:45/mile pace). A few more months and I got that down to 20:01. It shouldn't be hard at all coming in under 16.5min for 1.5 miles.

I started running 1 mile when I was in college, and my time seriously sucked ass.
1st attempt was a 9:3x at the end of the month though, it was back down to 7min/mile had that in middle school....lol I ran every other day though....I'm sure if I did more than 1 mile every other day, it would have improved drastically... right now, I'm hoping I'm at 8minutes lol...barely do any cardio recently.... |

Have you gone and tried a gentle, unpressured, timed run? Don't wait for the test and stress about it, go give it a try.
I'm 42 and can cover 1.5, if I try really hard, in about 11. Nice pace and I'd cover it easy in 14. As long as you keep putting one foot in front of the other, don't trip, you can cover 1.5 in 16.5 EASY. |
