OP strikes again.

I recline. Because the seat reclines. And I paid to use the seat!

you're thinking the "residence" on Etihad. That's a 1st class ticket and you basically get an entire suite - living room, separate bedroom, and private bathroom. I don't know if I'll ever fly that in my life.

The business class on Qatar is called Qsuites and it cost me $2,500 for a 14 hour flight, so a relative bargain (and much cheaper than it normally goes for... typically $5k-$6k).

But you still do get your own room - and offer turn-down service when you want to sleep... they give you pajamas.... the meals are befitting of a high end restaurant and are on demand. This was WELL worth the price.

$2,500 does seem like a bargain for that compared to $1,000+ for mediocre first class on a 2+ hour flight.

Flew down to Houston last Wednesday and flew back home Sunday. Ended up flying with Southwest because they had the cheapest / best flight times than anyone else.

Anyways..I am 6'4 and the guy on the first flight immediately decided to recline his seat and by the time the flight was over, I couldn't feel my legs and my lower back hurt.

On the way back, wasn't bad for me but my wife had a woman working on her laptop and about every 5mins, the lady would recline her seat and then bring it back up and slam her back into the seat?!?! My wife was getting super pissed. We wanted to say something to her about chilling out but she looked like a person who has a short fuse. So we didnt.

Next time..it's only first class for us. lol.

If you recline your head is like 6" from the face of the person in back of you. The issue is by choosing to recline, you are taking space from another person. That makes you an a-hole in my book. Flights are already cramped and unpleasant enough and you are choosing to make it worse for someone else. I wish they made fixed back seats. I've seen a few designs where the seat bottom slides forward to recline rather than so the only person you are stealing room from is yourself. Unfortunately I have yet to see those in a plane.

In economy plus or business, there is enough pitch that its not a huge issue, but don't be a jerk in economy.

I go 155 MPH in my BMW because that's what it will do.

That's just like 41 round trip flights from FL & NC. No rooms though, no food either, no reclining, no carry on luggage... actually I'm surprised they don't make you ride in the cargo area.

It's illegal to go 155 mph on most roads. If I'm on a racetrack though... I'll give it a shot. No laws as far as I know about not reclining your seat on a plane.

This isn't seat related but have a question about points. I see people who get these great upgrades and cheap flights via points. Any tips or tricks? Trying to figure this out before I book my flights to Greece. If it's a 2-4-2 I don't mind flying economy in the 2 section. But I've got all these points I need to start using so trying to see if I can be smart in how I go about this.

On our longer hauls (Japan) we've done premium select on Delta and when I turned to look at everyone in the back I was so happy I wasn't part of that misery (3-5-3).

I have sooooo many AA miles. I got them back when I used my card for a business I had that bought a lot of product. However I don't fly much and when I do it's typically short distance so then I feel bad wasting miles on a ticket that might only cost me $100 if I bought it. I tell myself I will save them for when I go on a long trip and I never do.

Anyways I recall with AA I could pay a small fee like $50 or $75 plus some miles and I could upgrade to business/first class. I can also book the whole thing with miles which is what I would do if I was flying to Europe or something. I did it last time when we flew to Wyoming. For me it's really just about the larger seat and only having 2 seats. The actual service, food etc is basically what coach use to be like back when I was a kid.

I mean, they recline for a reason. Not everybody can sit straight for hours, especially across the Atlantic or Pacific. I try to be mindful and not recline all the way, but I’m gonna recline when I need to. Others will do the same.

They recline because they were designed when seat pitches were reasonable. They don't recline so you can put your head in my lap. If I sneeze, I sneeze. I'll do what I need to. Others will do the same.

So you’re one of those people that would throw a fit if the person in front recline. Btw, not sure if you knew this but your seat can recline too. So the person in front won’t be in your lap.

As it turns out, not every seat in a plane reclines. So your solution is that when you decide to recline I and every single person behind you in the plane should have to recline or have their personal space grossly invaded? Very generous of you. I'm glad 37 people behind you could accommodate your choices.

Almost every seat reclines. A select few rows don't and it's typically displayed when you book your flight and pick your seat, but yes. Everyone should be uncomfortable for those select few who may or may not be in a none reclining seat.

Me, I just take personal responsibility. If I plan to be on a long flight I will try to go business class and/or select seats in "premium" rows with more seating. If it's a short flight then I don't bother and take my chances. Even if I end up in a non reclining seat, a couple of hours with the person in front of me reclined the whooping 5 inches or whatever tiny amount they recline, isn't going to kill me.

If you’re stuck in seats on the last row against the toilets, then you’re SOL. In that case it’s worth asking people in front not to recline too much. But if they do, you can’t really force them not to. Look at it from another perspective: if everyone around you recline and you choose not to, that’s your choice. If you choose to make a big deal out of the person in front of you reclining, you’ll come off like an ass. People paid to use those seats and they should be able to do what they want with them, up to a point. It’s not the travelers’ fault airlines decided to make seats smaller and closer to each other in order to maximize revenue. Flying has gotten worse, and you’re expecting people to be uncomfortable and sit up right for the 16-18 hours from California to Europe just because you don’t think they should recline?

Sometimes (for example, when trying to work or eat), reclining one's own seat makes the situation even less comfortable. Now you have the seat in front of you pitched back + you are sitting in a weird position and need to lean forward in your seat. So not really a solution.

Definitely understand. I personally try to be mindful and look back before I recline. I always put my seat up straight when eating so the person in the back has more time. If they're working, I'll try not to recline too much. If I were in that position, I would nicely ask the person in front to put the chair up a bit. On the other hand, you can have someone working in the back always hitting your seat even if your seat is straight.

This thread reminded me of when my gf at the time and I flew some SFO to SGN on Singapore Airlines. We were towards the back (few rows from the very back). A little into the flight, my gf reclined the seat to sleep. She has a slight back problem. The lady in the back kept pushing the seat up. My gf told me so I tried reclining it for her, and that woman put her knees up to block it. When we asked her what the deal was, she said it's her space. We called the cabin crew and they told her that we had the right to recline our seats, as she did with hers. She said she doesn't want to recline her seat. In the end, we agreed to recline half way. Flight was full, otherwise they would have moved either of us. Her husband didn't say a word the entire a time. He didn't seem to want to get involved and just looked away. If she has just said something or asked nicely, we would have been more understanding and my gf would have reclined just a bit to help her be more comfortable.

This is just yet another problem the airlines have made for themselves. They keep reducing pitch to squeeze more people in, but replacing seats is expensive, so those get left alone. Its similar with the fight for bag space onboard. They added fees to checked luggage, so everyone tries to bring a rollaboard. It slows down boarding and deboarding. The increasing passenger counts makes it increasingly unlikely. They will never address it unless they start putting in those horrible looking 'standing' seats that can squeeze even more people in.

No, don't be that guy. Also, don't be the guy that constantly smacks or slams the seatback in front of you. Someone is sitting in the seat, you dick!

Don't recline on domestics - and I get annoyed by people that do. Kills me more on a regional flight that's even tighter.

Just wish the recline feature was like the trains in Japan, where you slide your own seat forward (lose your own leg space ) to recline. Probably wouldn't see so many douche bags then.
