I have always wanted one. The only thing I know is it is a pretty big step up from the dull 525i engine. It is one of the worst things about the car and it always shakes at idle.

2004 E60
I own one and LOVE it, I have had NO problems with it. I have owned 15 BMWs and three of them were 5 series. I currently have 2004 530i Silver Grey Mat. with 20" Chrome Asanti's and it rides great. I recommend the buy!

Is it a fast car, does it have effortless power all the way through the powerband?

i would look into maybe an 07 530i ive seen them about 30,000 miles only $25,000 and if you do buy an 04 just make sure they have records on changing the oil frequently

IF you are looking for a "fast car" that is subjective. However, if your asking that quesiton I would not recomend a 525 528 or 530. The 535i or the V8 at the very least.
