Progressive snapshot device

hypothetically - will the device work if it is plugged into a vehicle that it is not intended for?

hypothetical example: Ford --> Hyundai

by work I mean record data and transmit

a lot of hypotheticals

You are right - obd port is standard. But I wonder if the device is coded for a specific brand.

I'm getting the vibe the original poster is planning to place the progressive snapshot into the 2009 Toyota Camry his live in great great grandfather drives and tell progressive the snapshot is in his M2 which regularly sees the north side of 125 mph.

I always thought it would be funny to get one and go on a track, then submit the information back to see what they say.

It would be funny to spoof all the info for their device.

Snapshot is a joke anyways, drove like a normal person and when the time was up I think insurance went down a whopping $6/mo.

Driving with spirit would have been worth more than the measly $6/mo.

I like the 'take it out on track' idea. If somebody would take it out on track, I'll volunteer to get one for my Mom's '09 Versa that she has put a whole 6100 miles on so far, and we can see what they say when it starts racking up very short, but very fast 'trips to the library' (or to the store, nobody under 60 knows what a library is anymore).

...and highly illegal. Not that I'm innocent I've spoofed a device or two. You can't pay me enough to use one of those damn things.

Yep! Same story for me. I had it in my Focus and drove like a granny for a month. I only had the "hard braking" warning go off like 2 times all month when people cut me off. No change whatsoever in premiums.

The problem is it heavily weights the time of day that you drive. So because I commute to and from work during rush hour, I'm in the highest risk category. Late at night is also bad.

The only way it can possibly benefit you is to:

1) Drive fewer miles
2) Drive only between 11am and 3pm
3) Drive extremely conservative at all times

If you don't meet all 3 criteria, it's a waste of time.

Worked great for a vehicle that is rarely driven. Also helps not to drive at high risk times, avoid hard braking and high speeds. For example, I have a Silverado that we drive about 3,000 miles per year. I gave the snapshot device a go and have been getting a 30% discount (the max) ever since.

We then tried it on my wife's leased 2011 Regal Turbo and got a 10% discount. Then we leased a 2014 Chrysler 300S AWD w/Hemi and she didn't get a discount, driving way too aggressively lol. We didn't even try with her new lease or my 335i.

mmkay, so you are hoping to fool progressive, which appears to be the reason you started this thread. And your grand idea was to seek an answer from....progressive?

Did you really believe they would say "Oh certainly, you could definitely fool us by doing that, please don't. Pretty please."

They say the data will not increase your rates. I have not heard or seen anything otherwise.

True...they 'say' that. But what if your premium increases and they say it is for other reasons? You can't prove it.

Alternatively, what if you were going to get a discount the next year, but because they have your history, they decide you are riskier than they knew, so no discount? You don't know what you are missing.

I prefer anonymity - to the extent possible.

You are right, we would be unable to prove it either way.

With that said, I have been saving about $200 per year with it.

I looked into doing this a while back, because i have a perfect driving record, so i thought it would help save some money.. WRONG! I found out that a lot of peoples rates actually went up! It tracks what TIME you drive, and if you are driving during peak times, that goes against you. The distance you drive to work, and if its more than like 7 miles, that hurts you. If you hit your brakes too hard, THAT hurts you. There are so many things that people dont realize when they give it a try. I definitely wouldn't recommend it.
