So it's classified as a "M" but at the same time M division said they are never doing a FWD car.

Feels like BMW lost their way a bit here.

Its been almost 3 years they lost their way when they started doing this with M235 etc . E92 had just 335i or 335d , no m badge before the number.

Absolutely should have left it this way. Would have accepted 235is as well. But "Marketing", I guess.

The 2 Gran Coupe does not offer anything in particular to 2 Coupe G42.

Thanks for the reply! I'm looking forward to a G42/maybe G87.

To understand how it is approached and delivered.
BMW MSport and MPerformance are bookends to BMW M.
Sub-Brands within a Brand. With BMWM being a sub-brand of BMW along with BMWi.

It just feels disingenuous to me. This is coming from a guy who use to have the M235i. I feel the car stands on it’s own merits without needing the M badge. What’s worse, is that US site basically passes the M Performance vehicles as full M cars.

Just my opinion. Obviously I don’t run BMW so can’t control what they do.

Most people don't know crap. When I had my 2014 F31 with the little m logos on the fenders (my 2017 doesn't have em) people would ask if it's an M car... the enthusiast knows it's not a real M car.

Much more than 3 years. The M550d was introduced in 2011 and the F20 M135i was introduced in 2012, for example.

The only eye-brow raiser I see is the fact that this car only has a top speed of 130 when the top speed of the x2 m35 is 155 lol
My sister has an X2. It drives like total garbage. Never once did I think "this drives well" when driving it.

We hate on FWD BMWs because they have gone way too far away from what a BMW should be. These aren't BMWs they are marketing exercises made for people who can't or don't care about what a true BMW should be.

Most importantly these were made to cut costs...building small RWD cars like the original 1-series cost almost as much as building a 3-series but with less profit. Enthusiasts aren't evaluating cost cutting we evaluate how things drive...

First time we saw it was in 1985 in the E28 M535i - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_5_Series_(E28)

Edit: Correction. 1983 E24 M635CSI - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_6_Series_(E24)
