335 vs '05 911 Turbo

Last night, I headed into town to meet up with a few friends.

I live about 20 Km ( 14 miles) out of town. The drive into town (especially on the weekend) is great - a mix of back roads and some highway.

A few minutes into the drive, I recognise 911 headlights coming up on me really fast.

Slip my car into DS and gun it. We are neck and neck most way, and pace each other until we get off the highway.

Arrive at a red light side by side. Its a '05 911 Turbo. Jet Black and pristine and all stock (obviously someone who loves his cars).

We have a quick chat - and he tells me he was really surprised with how a 330 could keep up with him. Of course, I correct him and tell him about the twin turbos.

We decide to drag at green.

BUT, I screw the launch up (basically, my phone rang and I looked down as the light turned green).

I launch about half a second after he does. But I manage to hang on and not let the distance between us increase.

What was surprising was the way the Porsche leaped forward the minute he revved the engine.

At the next traffic light (can't drag since cars in front), he tells me he is gonna have to go test drive the 335 now. - another convert possibly.

Sounds like a fun night zetaxi.

I spent some time racing with (and driving) a couple of 911 turbos on the track. They have this amazing acceleration of the mark but I the 335 is not too far off the pace – well with a PROcede anyway. I think it’s a case of a 911 turbo driver being surprised at just how quick our little Bimmers can go.

Cheers.

My first race LACR (German Invasion) was against a red 911 Turbo. I beat him through the 1/4 mile in my bone stock 335i, Steptronic Auto. So yes, it is possible to win a street race against one.

Wow. I can't believe I'm reading this. I had an '01 011 turbo with the Upsolute.com chip, 510 hp, 487 tq (crank). That car was so much faster than the 335 i, even with PROcede. The only race I ever lost was to a 650+ whp built corvette with no seats or interior + nitrous (who walked me by a mile and kept pulling at any speed).

Those 911 TTs are just too fast if they have ANY mods at all. I know some of you are great drivers, and we all love the 335 i, but it isn't in the same league as a 911 TT.

BTW--Fantastic driving, Hotrod!!

hey hotrod, out of curiosity.. was his turbo tiptronic or manual? i see he reacted faster on the starting line but you had progressively better iterations through the track. he even had a faster avg speed through I3 and you beat him great car but more importantly - better driver.

Faster or not Id take a 911 Turbo (993 an up) over ANY BMW anyday of the week. Straight line speed is everything

The 911 driver obviously screwed something up. 2.6 second 60' time for an AWD 911 turbo? Something screwy there. Look at the trap speeds 105 for the 911 and 101 for the 335 (both low)...the 911 was reeling him in despite the bad start. Please don't even begin to dream that a 335 is faster than a 911 turbo.

Yeah, I have a friend with a 996TT that I "car-sat" for 10 days.
He was cool with me driving it.

All I have to say is it will smoke any stock 335i if the driver knows how to drive it.
Prime example of this is the guy who raced HotRod.
Look at his 60 foot time= 2.5 seconds in a 415 hp AWD car?

When driven properly they run 0-60 in low 4's and 1/4 in 12's @ 113-114 mph

A PROceded 335i could stay "close" but still the 996TT could creep away.
They are fast cars, but get out of boost on them and they can bog.

I've driven a 996 Turbo before and this sounds like a case of a poor driver. The 996 Turbo has similar weight, but an extra 100hp and 100lb-ft of torque over the 335i. I drive a BMW and think they are wonderful cars, but we have to be realistic here, the 996 Turbo is a faster car.

I agree, I think we're getting alittle carried away, drove a 911 Turbo and they are amazing cars with great acceleration. Must've been a bad driver in the Porsche

AND, IF the 335i can pace the 911 Turbo, we'll then I guess we can also keep up with the 360 modena HAHA

AWD twin turbo makes that thing jump off the line like that. And yes, agreed that this is a driver vs. driver issue, because based on the cars alone, the TT has a good .5-.7 of a second on the 335i.

A 996 or 997 turbo is much faster than a 335, procede or not. If you raced one and beat it, it was serious driver error.

Thanks for the laughs..a 335 beating a 996 turbo

Given equal drivers a 996TT should kill a stock 335.

I raced my buddies 997 C4 last night from a roll in 2nd, 2nd was dead even soon as i shifted to 3rd he sowly crept away.

This was a nice read, but BMW convert? I can't imagine going from a Porsche to a Bimmer. I would take a 911 Turbo over a 335i any day. Not saying the 335i is not a great car; just that if you've got the $$$ 911 all the way.

Yeah, that 2.5 second 60' time he pulled has everything to do with the result of that race. I was pulling 2.0 60' times in a stock S2000 and running 14 flat at 102mph in the quartermile... you mean to tell me that my S2000 is faster than the Porsche as well? Ha, yeah right. If any of you guys have been to a drag strip you're going to see cars running seconds away from the times they should be putting down b/c of bad track conditions, bad drivers, or both.

The 335i is a great car, but let's not get carried away.
