The Blue from Amex should create a history with a credit limit. If you really want to know call one the credit bureaus.

no...the american express blue card is a credit card. it has a limit like any other credit card.

the green, gold, platinum and black cards are charge cards where there is no pre-set spending limit and you have to pay it off each month in full.

If you travel alot the AMEX Platinum is worth it.

Free companion business class ticket wehn you fly to Europe, and you get tons of upgrades to rooms etc.

same here. i've been getting a lot notices about how i have been approved to upgrade to platinum, but that $395 annual fee is slowing me down. I know of all the perks associated with it, but just wondering whether if I really need it right now. i had just decided this morning to stick with gold, when i pop on my e-mail, and lo and behold, another email from amex inviting me to apply for the platinum.

i could use that $395 instead and get some more mods for the car!

LOL I get a notice to upgrade like every year. They must be having a Platinum card upgrade promotion for the holidays as I got a notice last week too. I remember it used to be $200 or $250 and I thought it wasn't worth it then either.

That's the older grandfathered in cost. I think the newer cost/year is $4000 now.
my dad has centurion too. He loves it. I and my sister are eligible to get platinum as spouce but for some reason, my dad gave it to my sis but not to me. I guess he knows my expenditure habit pretty well. So i am stuck with my own card which I think is enough. I hardly use their service to be honest..lol but the reward program is pretty nice.

Do you have a yearly fee for that student card? If so "around" how much is it? (Not trying to get too personal)

no, it's free. and i was approved with barely any credit. i think they basically approve you as long as you're in college and don't have bad credit.

which ever card you get, stay with a card at least 6 years and use it every month. I found this out when I bought my house at age 22. Credit can only built up with time. And ofcourse pay everything in time whether you chose to pay full amount or not. One late can make a good dent into your credit. Also, make sure to contact your Federal Loan to pay them back when you get out of school if you borrowed any money through Federal Financial Aid.

If you want to get an American Express card, I would recommend starting out with a credit card (like Blue). American Express puts a lot of weight on your personal history with them. As you build a history, it becomes increasingly easy to achieve very high credit lines and pre-approvals for other cards, etc.

In the future if you will actually take advantage of the benefits, then you can easily add a charge card (green, gold, platinum, though centurion has a strict spending requirement).

Its like Deja Vu. I just brought this up about the Amex blue card and when I got home from school last night, Amex sent me the pre-approval in the mail for the blue card. I will let everyone know if I do decide to get it. Thanks for the helpful knowledge.

We've got Centurion cards (me & my husband), we do quite a bit of travelling and take advantage of both the travel perks and the concierge service, best thing since sliced bread IMO. It is a bit steep fee wise, and the requirements are a little steep, but most definitely worth it.
