I bought my girls engagement ring at a really nice jewelry store. They custom made the ring themselves and I picked out a nice looking diamond to go in it.

Pay for cut first, color second, clarity last. Carat just kind of falls out of the equation after you figure out how nice you want the diamond to be. Get ideal cut, colorless but don't waste money on clarity. SI2 is only visible under 10x magnification, you'll never know the difference between SI2 and VS1, but you'll pay big for it. Cut and color are what make the diamond sparkle.

I'll post a pic up of mine if I get a chance tonight.
As a Jeweler, I couldnt agree more with this. A nice SI1 diamond with an ideal cut and F-G color will be just right. And I suggest starting with a smaller 1ct diamond cause girls will ALWAYS want to upgrade and change their ring. So if you find a place that has an upgrade plan you're even better.

And if you really want to spend extra money, get it with some sort of certification. GIA is the best.

Personally when I get engaged, my girl is getting a little 1/4ct Dia solitaire cause if she wont marry me over the ring we got a problem, lol.

definitely pay for a good diamond with good size, color, etc... no point in buying a 'brand' name when it comes to engagement rings.

+1 on generic

Buddy just got engaged and his now fiancee wouldn't let him shop anywhere besides Tiffany's because she wanted the name. Her diamond is smaller than the ones in my college ring.

I know nothing about engagement rings and never will, but can you buy the setting from say Cartier and then buy the diamond from a jeweler? Kinda poser I guess, but if she's set on the look of one.....

how can one verify that a diamond matches to a specific report?

is there anything a company can do like, selling you a lesser quality diamond but include a GIA report that is for a better quality diamond?

Just take it to another Jeweler to verify it at another store. Most of the time they tell the truth. But realistically GIA has some labs in some locations you can take it to to get checked. But usually swapping stones with reports doesnt happen.
