FIA taking action on Red Bulls flexible rear wing

About time too...this after rear facing camera shots of Red Bulls rear wing showed excessive flexing between idle and high speed.

The FIA has told teams it will introduce new load-deflection tests from 15 June.
In addition to new, more targeted static tests, the FIA plans to use on-board cameras to monitor the behaviour of wings while cars are in motion in an attempt to spot any excessive movement of bodywork.
Teams will be required to put a series of markings on their wings to facilitate this process.

Article 3.8 of the F1 technical regulations states that bodywork must be "rigidly secured to the entirely sprung part of the car" and "remain immobile in relation to the sprung part of the car".

This is a ban on so-called 'moveable aerodynamic devices', which has been in place for many years.....Static load tests were later included to stop Red Bull using flexible front and rear wings to reduce drag at high speed.

well seems FIA puts a mercy on Red Bull that not going deep on this situation at the moment and even giving them basically more than a month of time.. if they are being sneaky..

Get of your high horse, the news is that FIA will be doing tests on ALL wings not just singling out anyone in particular.

Toto gave Horner a heads up about using flexible rear wings but Red Bull took no notice.
Hence it got referred to the FIA with the question..."if its ok for Red Bull then we can use it too?".

So back to Mercedes winning basically every race by 10+ seconds like we've had for as long as most people can remember.

Yay

This is brilliant, less down-force during straights giving you higher speeds.
Brilliant cheating, these guys are so crafty.
Like how Lancia was cheating like crazy during the glory days of rallying. (sweeping the road, changing tires on the side of the road...)

Problem as I see it is with the regulations and how they are enforced. Virtually nothing is completely rigid and immobile. Cars structure, bridges, your house, sky scrapers, they all have some amount of deflection under load. With the new testing they will have to decide on how flexible is acceptable. Other cars wings may not be as flexible but I am willing to bet that under high enough speeds they are not completely rigid either.

If this is an advantage and there was not a specific, explicit rule against it, then I'm surprised that other teams did not discover this through wind tunnel testing. After all, you don't want to overbuild pieces so I would think they would notice if less rigid aero parts imparted an advantage. That said, Red Bull might have taken that observation and built parts with different materials that are meant to flex just as much as desired without leading to breakage. The FIA should eventually allow this as it sounds like just good science. I suppose they would want all teams to have the chance to use it though from the start of a season.

I wouldn't call it cheating. Just sounds to me like walking on the fine line of the boundary of the rules. Happens in every race series, just goes to the extreme when the available funds are massive

Ferraris fuel flow cheat operated within the structure created to monitor it...doesn't make it any less of a cheat.
Red Bull knew exactly what they were doing and that it was against the regulations.
Red Bull were cheating the regulations and deserve to be sanctioned..its a shame they won't be.

They passed the existing tests, now new tests will be implemented June 15th. Not seeing how they could pass the existing static load tests but still not be meeting the static load regulations. To me the FIA (the ones running the test) should take a lot of the blame as their tests look like they aren't meeting the goal.

They're all at it. The engineers' job is to make the car go as fast as they can, while outwardly adhering to the rules. Ways to subvert tests are the lowest hanging fruit.
