I think World Challenge is supposed to be there August not July. Might be a typo.

Indeed. A record 24-race calendar has been confirmed by Formula 1's governing body for the 2023 season. The new race in Las Vegas and the return of Qatar and China makes next year the longest ever season despite the loss of the French Grand Prix.

Possible unpopular opinion inbound:

24 races. not a fan of that. All of the lip service about engine penalties, budget cap, Gross Annual carbon footprint, team-members' quality of life. - all sacrificed to milk the turnip. ... that was already producing more turnip milk than anyone knows what to do with.

I am enamored with F1, but this move is yuck.

Dang kid's gonna hug the bunny to death.

Past Summer, rumors circled of lobbying by the French to keep the French Grand Prix on the F1 calendar. Renault is important for F1.

But keeping Le Castellet (Paul Ricard circuit) on the F1 calendar may have been at the expense of Spa-Francorchamps. And for F1 pilots, the choice is a no-brainer: they love driving the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. But F1 pilots have no real say - it's the Liberty Media Corporation who calls the shots.

So IMHO dropping the French Grand Prix at Le Castellet ain't quite a "loss" if that saves a spot for Spa-Francorchamps on the F1 calendar.

Stefano Domenicali pitched the idea of conceiving a street race in Nice (Côte d'Azur): https://scuderiafans.com/details-abo...n-from-locals/. But that idea was later rejected by the mayor of Nice (there was also protest by locals): https://www.nicematin.com/auto/chris...-a-nice-782981

Interesting article moving forward:

F1’s new rules will eventually close up grid, says F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has no doubts that new regulations will eventually serve to close up the grid, despite Red Bull’s dominance this year.

F1 introduced all-new rules for 2022, aimed at both improving the racing and giving more teams a chance of success through the gap between the front and the back of the grid getting smaller.

This is being helped by a combination of a cost cap plus an aerodynamic handicap system that allows more windtunnel and CFD development time for teams further down the order.

However, as some had feared, the first year of the new rules has resulted in there being quite a big gap between the teams that got it right and those that did not.

Ferrari and Red Bull have emerged as being in a class of their own and the championship battle has been quite one-sided in Max Verstappen’s favour.

Domenicali is not too alarmed at the situation though, and thinks that as teams get to understand the new rules – and the squads at the front find diminishing returns from car improvements – things will get much more competitive.

“It is clear that a championship with these gaps between first and the second will not deliver the finale we saw last year,” explained Domenicali, speaking to Italian media.

“But despite this, we have already sold out in the remaining grand prix on the calendar. I believe that from a technical point of view, it is important to understand how quickly certain performance gaps can be closed, and this is one of the points on which the regulations were based.

“We also need to see how much the performance of the cars was influenced by the regulations, and how much was down to reliability or management [problems]. It needs a good analysis to understand what caused a big gap between the leaders and the rest.

“Because if we look at the ranking as a whole, we see that behind the leader there are tighter fights than in the past. I want to give a positive interpretation.

“I believe that in the next few years, the regulations will lead to an even tighter reduction of the gap that currently exists between the leader and the rest.”

With the cost cap being so central to F1’s hopes of keeping the field compact, Domenicali is aware of how important it is that the FIA effectively polices it.

For if teams can find ways around the regulations, then that risks allowing them to find an unfair advantage.

“I think it's a crucial aspect,” he added. “We need to be sure that whoever supervises compliance with the financial rules ensures that everything runs smoothly.

“I know that the FIA is working hard, and it is an important step because we need to be sure that all the teams have spent the same amount in the development of their cars. Everything must be checked and verified.

“This will be the central theme of the coming months and from here the credibility of these regulations will also come."

Despite Domenicali’s confidence that things will close up over time, especially with the cost cap in place, McLaren technical director James Key has expressed his surprise at the way in which Red Bull and Ferrari have stayed clear of the opposition this year.

Speaking to the McLaren website, Key said: “I suppose I am a little surprised at how two teams have been able to find that extra bit of performance compared to everyone else.

“It was a tighter field at the beginning of the season, but it's beginning to stretch out now, and I have to say, Ferrari and Red Bull have done an excellent job of exploiting more.

“It shows that even within a cost cap, if you're a big team with an extensive infrastructure and a lot of knowledge and methodology built over many years, it still very much counts.

“It's a level playing field in terms of the budget we've got, but it's not in terms of where we're all coming from – that gives us an excellent reference point to aspire to.”

Toto Wolff would have enjoyed battling Porsche in F1 🤺

He believes Red Bull going ahead with the plans to build its own F1 engine is a "very bold strategy". Do you agree with him? 💬
