I have dedicated winter tires on my RWD 550 and its a tank in the snow.
Ever since going with winter tires i can never go back to anything else in the winter. The difference is DRAMATIC. I would drive a RWD car with winter tires over a AWD car with summer/all seasons any day of the week. No question. Alan

I don't know why so many people drive in the snow with summers and then say it must be the X5M. These are the same people who would wear flip flop sandals in the snow and then say their feet are cold and can't get good grip when walking. Hmm. I guess something must be wrong with their feet.

They make you sign a waiver where I live stating that you understand the car is equipped with summer tires and that for winter driving proper winter tires are a must. This is so that we don't sue the dealer or BMW and put the liability back on the owner.
Long story short yes winter tires are a must for cold weather. Summer tires doesn't even work in snow. |

Are they as good as snows, no...but plenty capable. I got stuck out once on the oem run flats before I was able to swap tires and I might as well have been ice skates.

I think the short answer is you can't use the summers in the winter and unless you are trying to offset the cost of buying the new all season tires and rims by selling your sumer set, it makes most sense to keep the summers and buy a dedicated winter set.

No you didn't, and you certainly are making it very clear that you have tons of money and you may or may not enjoy showing it off by asking ridiculous questions which demonstrate your utter disregard for said wealth, value, and/or safety for that matter.
A $100,000 car is not a beater and shouldn't be considered one no matter how wealthy you may be, so this thread should be closed with the simple answer: No. Summer tires are utter crap in the northeast. For everyone else around you's sake on the road please don't drive any car with designated summers in the wintertime, it is dangerous. You can buy a jack, a torque wrench, and a set of winter wheels/tires for your M5 for less then $3,500 and be totally fine in all but the worst snow conditions, and in said conditions it is generally irresponsible and dangerous to be out in all but an emergency anyway. . . And besides, you really don't need to be driving anyway because you're obviously really wealthy so getting to work on time to "punch in" is clearly not an issue. You don't seem to be listening to anyone's advice or reason and I'm fairly convinced that you are trolling to some degree based on the sheer arrogance behind your responses, but either way we are offering it just the same. I can't imagine any fathomable reason why you think you would need an X5M if you're only going to drive it in the winter. If you're concerned only with speed, you could get a Jeep GC summit for 1/2 the price and get tons of ground clearance, a killer adaptable suspension, and a bit less of an appointed interior. Hell you could even get the GC SRT and it would be just as fast, though you'd have similar ground clearance and the same issue with needing to put designated winters on it because it doesn't come with all seasons. If you REALLY want to drive a "100k beater" then get your X5M and either buy a jack, wheels, tires, and a torque wrench and swap winters on and off it, or for the love of god just pay someone to switch the wheels and tires once for $40 bucks (or pay them whatever you want since money is of no object). For the record, I drove my '15 m3 through the winter with a designated snows and different wheels and it did totally fine, but I wouldn't drive it in a severe storm because I definitely started to feel the edge of its grip in 2 of the icier storms that we had in NY this year. Its ok through most conditions, but 20 degrees plus snow OR anywhere more then 2 inches or so on the roads and you're really pushing it for a number of reasons. Thanks for making a 28 year old feel like a crabby, cantankerous old man.

Since nobody has linked it yet, here's top gears review of the X6. This car has summer tires on it.
