$700 Quintillion metal asteroid being studied by NASA
Okay I'm hoping someone with at least a little bit of knowledge of astronomy or even geology can help me understand this a bit more. Obviously the headline grabbed my attention because for one, you don't often hear "quintillion" thrown around. Add to that an asteroid that is being studied... well I clicked on it.
This is the link to the article but I couldn't find any details as to how they came up with such a figure in terms of value. Fascinating no matter what. I can see this being a theme for a future movie. https://nerdist.com/article/nasa-stu...llion-dollars/ What kind of metal could be found on this asteroid is the first thing that came to mind. |

Just send up Bruce Willis, Steve Buscemi, and the rest of the gang. They can mine it.

Mostly iron and nickel from what I've read, with possible lesser quantities of gold and platinum for the catalytic converter thieves.....

I've read about this asteroid, but I have a hard time believing we would ever mine it in its entity, or even start anytime soon. |

I saw this earlier too and what it didn't state, I guess cuz they don't really know, is exactly what metal(s) are present. Unless I missed it. I guess they are just value basing it on today's market for whatever they think the ting is made of

I am currently creating a "target" in my backyard for the astroid. You'll read about it in the papers

Whatever we mine will be easier put to use in space.
I'm actually kind of surprised Elon isn't already working on Musk Drive Yards as an orbital spaceship building station.

I was giving this a bit more thought and joked about the rare metals such as Rhodium and Palladium but it occurred to me that we don't have nearly enough metals that are found in EV batteries like lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel and copper. Much of these valuable materials are controlled by the likes of China on the global market and if we (US) are going to electrify most cars within the next decade or so, we need to find a solution regarding materials.
So, if that metal asteroid contains some of these desirable materials, it's going to be an all out war! As I said, a movie will be in the works. |
