The only reason I like Columbia is going through it on my way to Charleston.

Weather is miserable in the summer.

I've worked/traveled extensively through the Northeast, and would much prefer being North if visiting for a long period of time!

Agreed. If it was the Charlotte metro (Ft Mill, Rock Hill, etc) or the Charleston/Mt Pleasant area, I'd say SC in a heartbeat. Columbia is kind of a dump, IMO.

No idea where in Mass the other school is, however.

Boston is 1 hour from Boston in traffic...

I rather go in the south, at least they fake smile more?!?!

Umass will be sorta boring imo (also it's 2 hours west)

Off topic: why do groups @ restaurants split checks "scientifically" just think to your self: say I had the steak some of that app and a beer $30-$10 and $9 I'm good @ $60-

Does it need to be exact? god forbid I'm off by a few bucks

It's I pay all or one of my guys pays for all, it's simple, long run it's all square

Personally, for me, I wanted my law degree from a school in the NE, which is why I moved from the South; I had a great time living in Boston. But that was over a two decades ago, and as I get older am less tolerant of the winters and more inclined to look for a slower - and more relaxed pace of life.
We feel the same way every time we visit a big city. We moved here (central IL) from MA and it took a long time to get used to the lack of urban amenities like good restaurant choices and shopping, etc. And being away from the ocean and mountains was really a change for us. But now that we've lived here for 17 years, we find cities to be fun places to visit, but we're always glad to be home again after a week or two. So much more relaxed and quiet here. Just the lack of traffic alone makes it worth the trade off.

I agree.....not trying to be disrespectful for people who may live there. But I have spent more than my fair share of time in Columbia and while there are some nice places.....there are far more places that aren't and you don't want to be in at the wrong time day or night.

I have also lived in Ft. Mill and Rock Hill....and they were nice. Charlotte is decent but traffic is starting to get crazy because of the ongoing road work.

As for Southern hospitality.....that is more lower part of the state...and still some upper part of the states although it's disappearing quickly up here!

In Boston is more mixed, white black yellow and green, young and old, each neighborhood is unique, truly a melting pot (some good eaten for sure) BBQ one Saturday, Middle-eastern on Tuesday then Italian seafood on Friday, all a couple miles from each other (Cambridge)

I have friends of all backgrounds, my gay neighbor comes for dinner, he borrows my truck for homedepot things I borrow his gay Mini Cooper when me and Mrs Miller want the beach

Boston +1 for diversity!

Yeah, we lived in south Charlotte for the past 12 years - Steele Creek and Pineville - just moved back to home to MI in Jan.

Nice. Pineville is great.

At a previous job, I used to travel to Adrian/Tecumseh once a month. I liked it...especially when Delta finally upgraded their section of the airport as that was all my company used.

Whenever we go out in a group, just divide the check by the number of people; we find it easiest to split that way. And if the same group goes out with any frequency, any cost differential usually comes out in the wash, so to speak.....

Taxachusetts. No Thanks. The only thing appealing for me would be the proximity to semi-decent skiing

South Carolina all the way

I think that Amherst puts you 5-6hrs from Watkins Glen, if you're doing this during driving season (late April thru early October); then there is Lime Rock even closer.....

Born and lived most of my life in or near Boston, stick with SC.

Amherst is western MA, not exactly 'Boston' by any means (much different than what comes to mind at least when you think of the city). Mt. Idea campus would be much closer to the actual city, but as mentioned in other replies, much more costly.

MA is not that great in general, politics here suck, cost of living is outrageous (with taxes increasing all the time), and the people are generally miserable (based on my cynicism you can add me to that list). There are (if you're lucky) ~4 months of decent weather, the rest of the time it's hit or miss, but generally crappy and cold.

All that said, Boston itself is a decent city for someone who's young and just looking to experience new things. Job opportunities and career mobility are also better than most places. So take everything I've said with a grain of salt. I've stayed here mostly for family and job, now that my family is moving away I'm likely going to do the same in the near future.

What time of year would you be going for?

Are you single? If so, SC is the obvious answer.

Well, to be fair, Fall in New England is beautiful; actually, it’s one of my favorite places to be at that time of year. Just know that your six months will carry you into the winter......

It's only 5 to 10 times a year weather keeps me inside, winter isn't that big a deal

During snow storms stay inside after the plows clean it up go out

central Massachusetts isn't fun, might get a Olive Garden or if your lucky Ruby Tuesday's
The restaurants and night life (new casino) is all around Boston (90 miles away) so as a masshole I say SC is best, Amhearst had Marcus Camby and Lou roe but now just has cows, corn and Steven King 30 miles north

I hear ya. I guess I’m still recovering from the winter of 2015 when we had over 100 inches of snow; it’s seared into my memory.
