Impressive New Audi S5

I had many Audis before my BMWs and designs were sometimes a bit marmite, have to say they have done a great job IMHO on the new S5 & S5 avant. New interiors too make new X3 look cheap. Was looking at M340i xdrive and this is a contender

I really like the avant, unfortunately it's not coming to North America though. The "sedan" (although it's a hatchback) that's replacing the A4/S4 and A5/S5 Sportback is kind of bland to me, especially when compared to the current Sportback design.

Nice that they are going back to a DSG for this generation though, and with 579 lb-ft of torque, it should be plenty punchy (hopefully the weight is kept in check).

Edit: still some discussion on the the Torque output numbers (combined e-motor tq or not). Even still, the Audi released numbers are 367 hp / 406 tq and weight is somewhere around ~4300 lbs eek

I was recently browsing the Audi forums and a lot of Audi drivers have issues with Audi's turbo lag. My wife had a 2018 Audi A6 and while the car was fast, it did have more turbolag than my M340.

It's not turbo lag, it's throttle/transmission lag. This one has an E-motor within the DSG, so I doubt you will feel much lag at all especially with the high torque output. Depends how it's all tuned though.

Exactly, but you said "haldex system like now". The current setup is a torsen with rear sport differential as well. The only version with Quattro Ultra is the A4/5.

Honestly think the new S5 looks great, especially in that dark blue!

The current sportback is much better looking than the M440i GC, but it was lagging behind in interior tech and overall performance (can't top the B58 in this segment!). They went a bit overboard with the passenger screen, but overall it looks more modern inside and out.

The hatch is such a huge positive to me as I could fit bikes in there very easily (and I'm used to it from my RSX-S). I'm still 90% going for a flashy purple M240ix, but this is honestly the most tempting more practical option.

If I need to carry passengers more and didn't care as much about sporty performance, I would be swayed more. Curious to see the reviews against both the M440i GC and M340i (more headroom, less cargo, but materially cheaper).

So if you read the latest comment on that article after it got updated, the commenter makes some conclusions that its the set up from Mk8 Golf R where its still primarily FWD. There's also some discussion on Audi world that comes to the same conclusion. So it seems this is more in line with the RS3 in terms of driveline setup.

I think Audi is making it sound like its not Quattro Ultra, but all the Quattro Ultra cars have the DSG. All the Torsen Quattros had the ZF8. That seems to be the most obvious tell. This new A5/S5 has the DSG.

In general I think this new gen is worse in exterior and interior design and more generic. It has similar lines to the Kia K5 where the previous gen, even the base A5 looked sharp and the A4 had a notchback look that was unique among the germans.

Ultimately, diesel gate was kind of beginning of the end of VAG efforts for ICE and now EVs will be the end of VAG ICE. It shows here.

Dashboard seems to be an attempt to copy Mercedes with passengers screen etc.

Yea, you are correct... the info surrounding this even on other forums appears to be confusing... the thought initially was that ONLY the RS5 would get a true Quatto Torsen setup and that model would probably keep the 8AT.

I find it a bit hard to believe Audi upgraded to a new DSG and / or revised the tranny to make it fit to a true RWD biased setup since I don't think any other Audi with that setup has a DCT other than an R8... which is actually mid engine so that's entirely different.
