Questions about device on exhaust pipe

So I went to a mechanic today to have them give me an estimate on a muffler delete on my 2015 428xi and everything went normally til they pointed out a device on the outermost pipe and said I should get it checked out to make sure chopping it off wouldn't give me a problem. After reading the sticky I think it's a control for the valve system, so I'm just wondering, is it? And will there be any problems if I cut off the muffler section entirely, including that part and run pipes from the res back?

Whatever you do, DO NOT touch it. Everything will blow up. Everything.

LOL!! It's the actuator for your exhaust flap, I personally haven't heard of any issues as quite a few people have done the same

yay answers. so just to clarify the actuator is the thing that tells the flap in that pipe of the exhaust to open once the car reaches a certain rpm/goes to sport mode?

also what is that actuator connected to, like if i cut off the muffler will i have to disconnect it(the device) from something?

thanks.

Just disconnect the electrical plug and wrap it up with a bit of plastic bag and tape in case it's ever needed again (many have unplugged it to leave the flap open). Then chop the exhaust off as usual.

This ^^

However, if drone is an issue for you...you may want to reconsider and just add a down pipe

correct me if i'm wrong but I thought the drone only got really bad if you delete the resonator? do you have a res+muffler delete or just a muffler delete?

also how hard is it to disconnect the item?

How bad the drone gets is subjective. There have been a few people who have experienced noticeable drone around the 3500 rpm range with just muffler delete, then put it back and added DP.

Disconnecting actuator plug is straight forward, just protect against the elements if disconnected

I suggest you head over to the Engine/Exhaust Forums and do a little searching/research
