Scariest moment of my life

So I was on a common trail with my dog when I came face to face with a bear. Got to say wasn't prepared for that, nor may I have made the right decisions, but I am thankful me and my dog are safe.

Be careful out there in the woods, mother nature is crazy!

just an FYI the trail was a dead end behind me which leads to the water falls

If that was a black bear he would of killed your dog, brown bears are easily frightened unless forced. You should of left the dog and just pray he follows.

Holy mother nature in full force. That's crazy

Interesting, how once those instincts kick in your dog wasn't heeding your call, and I am sure he would probably never do that under normal circumstances.

On a serious note, that was scary. Good thing you are both safe

It's hard to say if what you did was "right or wrong" per se. It's not like you could have busted out the rule book and read the chapter, "What to do if I see a bear and my dog is barking at it and there's a waterfall behind me" real quick. I probably would have done the same thing you did. I'm just glad to hear that you and your dog are safe.

Damn, the good thing is you and your dog got away without getting hurt. Might not be a bad idea to have a long leash next time though. I get the idea of the freedom of letting your dog walk around on it's own, but dogs do get snatched up by bigger wild animals more often than people think. You can train a dog to the moon and back, but sometimes they'll get that tunnel vision too and don't always know how to pick their battles.

Personally, I would have been chucking big ass rocks and whatever I could find at the bear.

I've had boxers all my life and they are great dogs. Good thing you had some recall on yours.

Now I have a pit bull because I couldn't take all the boxers health problems.

Next time carry a leash and a 45 with xp bullets and you don't have to worry about the bear :-) I am surprised the bear didn't become more hostile seeing her cubs were near by.

Did your dog not at least have a collar? Once that dog came back to you, I would have had him by his collar for sure, fck that. My dogs wouldn't have listened to me either (well one of them, the other takes off if he sees animals).

Glad you made it out ok.

I wonder if the bear wasn't violent because its cubs were up in the trees. I feel that if the cubs were next to it and your dog came barking in like that it would have ate it for lunch. Either way glad you and your dog are okay. Bears are scary and faster than people think.

I never go into the woods unarmed and this is why. I can't imagine what a freak I would have been if one of my kids were with me.

Glad you are ok. Common place on many trails in Alaska with large Grizzly Bears.

Also, you could have avoided this all together by either picking up your fricken dog or putting a leash on him and go on your way. This video is what "Not to do" IMO. If I was there with my dog he would have been picked up with one arm and 454 Casul in the other hand and I would be walking the other way.

We had some run-ins in the late 1990s but I havent been back up that way. The Grizzlys you can easily scare unless they are threatened.

Honestly a .45 is considered to small of a round to carry on our 10 mile+ hikes. Some of us carried shotguns with slugs, 454 Casul and a Barrett 50 BMG. All can down the largest Grizzly if attacked.

The thing to remember though with all animals is you will be scared shitless and either standing still or running your ass off.

We all remember this...

These days if I walk around in the forest I have a rifle with me. Get yourself a decent semi auto rifle of some sort.

Absolute best video of the day... you had my entire family laughing at your predicament. I lost it when you called your dog a dumb ass. Classic. "You just run!!!!"

A couple of observations here... On thing is I absolutely loved your reaction. It was hilarious as I know my dog would act the same way and I would say the same things but my only critique is that the second you saw those cubs, you should have been well on your way to the next county. A momma bear is not to be fucked with.

A 45 even with XP will not do much to a bear.
