Incredible crane assembly animation

Quote:
Recession or no, I still see plenty of cranes in Manhattan putting up new buildings. Thing is, I've still never seen them actually put the cranes up; one day they're just there, and some days they mysteriously get taller.

If you've ever wondered how they assemble cranes on-site, and then how they manage to raise them higher, check out this animation from Italian company San Marco Cranes.
I was browsing core77, a design website, and I came across this. I found it to be amazing and thought you guys may as well. it sure as hell answered one question floating in the back of my mind lol

Pretty cool, it's crazy how the crane in the second video sets up.

Wait so that white piece lifts the weight of the WHOLE crane up to put another peace in? That's insane!

i know! haha. that hydraulic mechanism in the white piece lifts it. i never knew how intense they are. something totally overlooked thats used to create huge structures is in its own way, an incredible piece of engineering. it builds itself...kinda creepy haha

and i never thought about how they were stabilized onto the ground

the second one is also crazy at such a scale

The tower cranes are usually tied off to the building.

Yeah, but that's a little extreme.

Remember the one that fell over in NYC? I believe it was because they didn't have enough tie-offs to the building. I think one of them broke off while they were erecting a new piece.

watch the first video. At around 4:30, it shows you how they make the crane taller by using the crane itself.

not the whole crane, but just the top part, that white piece continues moving up near the top as the crane get taller, so its always lifting the same amount of weight doesn't matter how high the crane gets.

for that building, the construction started like this:

then when they got to the top, the cranes used each other to take each other apart until there was one left. that remaining one disassembled itself lower and looks like it built another crane beneath it so that when it reached that level, the new crane took it down completely. i would assume that was what happened over and over on the way down until they reach ground level

you can see it here:
