What would you have driven in decades past?
I read an article in Autoblog entitled What would Drive in 1985? So that got me thinking, let's have some fun in this COVID-19 lockdown...
Simple question: Assume you are a single late 20-something guy living in the 70's, 80's & 90's, what car would you buy? Also assume you have a job with slightly above average pay for that decade, so no expensive cars like Porsche, BMW M, MB AMG, Corvette, etc. Since this is a BMW board, let's do BMW and non-BMW. I'll start: 1970's BMW: 2002tii Non BMW: Datsun 240/280 Honorable mention: Pontiac Trans Am 1980's BMW: E30 325i Non BMW: Toyota Supra (MKIII) Honorable mention: Honda Civic/CRX Si 1990's BMW: E36 325i Non-BMW: VW Golf VR6 Honorable mention: Acura Integra Type R |

Good idea for a thread.
Without a doubt some something from the 3-series line for me.

I had the 2002, 325i, and 325i in your list. All three were new car purchases. Loved my 1971 2002.

Although you weren't a "single late 20-something guy" in all of those decades...unless you own the DeLorean

The car I wanted in the mid '80s was a Ford Mustang SVO, or a Mercury Mekur. '90s was an E30. 1970s was a Ford Pantara. |

I was single & in my twentys during the nineties & owned cars from those three decades a 1967 restocal beetle (well almost the seventies), a 1986 jetta 16v GTI, 1992 e34 525is & a 1991 e34 3.6 M5 & would make the same choices again.
Wish I'd kept the Beetle But the M5 was the ultimate Q Car

70's : BMW 2002 Turbo
The most similar car to what I own in the 70's 80's : Mitsubishi Starion Turbo I'm a Japanese car enthusiast at heart and these have always looked really cool to me. Lots of honorable mentions here, though most of them come towards the end of the decade: 924 Turbo, Mazda 323 GTX, E30 M3, Mazda RX-7 Turbo II 90's : MKIV Supra TT This is almost the entire reason I own the M2C. I wanted a new Supra, but then the new Supra came out and only had an auto and was no longer a twin-turbo'd 2+2. Honorable mentions: E36 M3 sedan, 300ZX TT. |
