US Open unbelievable!
I have to admit I haven't been following tennis too closely for a while but this year's US Open has been incredible. In particular the women's side with two unseeded teenage players making it all the way to the Final match. I've never seen anything like it. Especially incredible is Raducanu as she had to go through qualifying just to get to the US Open.
Leylah Fernandez (Canada) v. Emma Raducanu (Great Britain) It should be a fun match to witness. Neither one was expected to be where they are. Raducanu I predict will win as she just seems really dialed in and dominant in her play. |

And OP the open has been great this year. we were there for a couple of days over the long weekend. Was great to have a lot of fans at capacity again. Lots of energy in the big venues. |

Congrats to Emma Raducanu!
Personally, Leylah's tournament performance is far more impressive than the final outcome. Her path to the finals consisted of: #3 Naomi Osaka - 3rd Round #16 Kerber - 4th Round #5 Svitolina - Quarterfinals #2 Sabalenka - Semifinals Meanwhile, the highest ranked matchup for Raducanu were: #11 Bencic - Quarterfinals #17 Sakkari - Semifinals I wouldn't be surprised if Leylah Fernandez gets a higher ranking than Raducanu in the next tournament. |

It was a great tournament. Good to see the new power house generation of women players. Now let's see if Novak pulls out a win and makes the Grand Slam. That would be impressive. I hope he does even though I am a Federer fan.

Yeah these two young women put their stake in the ground and the current ranked players are on notice. They are going to be strong over the next 10+ years and the fact they both blew through people through the entirety of the US Open is impressive to say the least. Neither one of them showed any signs of folding under pressure though Fernandez was a bit weak with her first serves. Remember, Raducanu had to play in the Qualis just to get into the Open so she played more matches. However, Fernandez had to play much higher seeded players and managed to get past all of them.
Anyway, they have bright futures ahead of them and it's refreshing to see some new blood in the game. Congrats to both. |

Remember no one thought anyone would ever surpass Pete Sampras after he won 14 Grand Slam events. Three of them passed him by far and are still playing! Unbelievable. |

In case anyone was wondering. This is how much money the players get at the US Open.
Especially crazy is Raducanu the winner who pulled in $2.5 Million. Until now she had only made about $165k or so total. Don't feel too sorry for Leylah Fernandez though as she still gets a cool $1.25 Million for her efforts. Prize money breakdown for 2021 US Open Men's and women's singles Place Prize money Winner $2,500,000 Runner-up $1,250,000 Semifinalists $675,000 Quarterfinalists $425,000 Round of 16 $265,000 Round of 32 $180,000 Round of 64 $115,000 Round of 128 $75,000 |

'only' $165k.... 'only'. At age 18 I'd earned a sum total of about $10k, maybe. I think our earnings are proportionate to our respective success, even more so now that she's banked $2.5m. I'm not a (completely) useless human...it just blows my mind how some are so much better.

LOL I didn't say I made "only" $165k when I was a teenager but I'm sure she had worked pretty hard to get that even. Young athletes do make a lot of sacrifices and especially their families to give them the best opportunity for success. Not very many can put that all together and succeed.
So to underscore my earlier remark and put that into perspective, this 18 year old girl just won herself a gigantic sum of money in the form of $2.5 MILLION. This is just the beginning for Raducanu. Her life will forever be changed by this single US Open victory. Now the endorsements will come flooding in and that will likely be even more money. Same can be said about Leylah Fernandez. By the way, what's the reaction like over there in the UK? It must be in every headline. |

Completely agree about the sacrifices and effort etc. And I didn't think you were intending to be dismissive.
To be honest, I generally bury my head in the sand regarding news; it's rarely good news. But at work tomorrow the radio will be on, so I'll get a feel for it then. I hope she is in all the headlines; people like this should damn well be celebrated! |

No worries, I understood what you meant.
There will undoubtedly be massive coverage of her over there because she's the first Brit female to have won a major since Virginia Wade did it way back in 1977 I think. That's quite a drought. Raducanu will become a household name. |

Agree with everything said here!
I love both Emma and Leylah, but I can’t help thinking Leylah deserved the winning trophy. She defeated all those top ranked players. She unfortunately needed 5 hours more court time than Emma to get to the championship match; hence Emma seemed the more refreshed out of the two. And how lucky are we to witness 20 grand slams each from 3 different men in the same era! I believe we will NEVER see anything like this ever again. If Novak wins this one, it might settle the debate on the GOAT. Being a Roger fan, that previous sentence was pretty difficult to type! Roger is close to retirement and Rafa MAYBE has one more Roland Garros in him. Novak still looks pretty fresh out there. |
