Mercedes new F1 car has adaptive toe in/out

Spotted on Hamilton's car is a steering system, probably hydraulically operated, that moves the front wheels outwards in bends then toe's in on the straights moving the steering wheel closer to driver.

This is why they win consistently, while everyone else is catching up to the W10 they are making innovations to become even faster.

You think it's legit..and will it give them an advantage pace wise in real terms.I can't see much noticeable movement at the control arm end only a bit on steering wheel going forward and back.

Yeah, the legitimacy of the system will definitely be questioned by other teams. There are plenty of discussions (and probably inquiries to the FIA) going on right now about whether its legal.

Regarding no noticeable movement at the control arm, I think that's normal. The change in toe is probably only a few degrees at most, so I think it would only be really noticeable in person next to the car (or maybe a zoomed-in slow-mo shot during a broadcast).

Yes it's also shadow falling over the angle point makes it look as if its hardly moving if at all.I would think it's for front tyre preservation more and whether it makes it marginally faster in the bends remains to be seen; They'll be changed anyway when the rears have cried enough.

I'm actually really confused by the article written on the F1 website about this. They call it a toe adjustment, but describe camber, and then get the details of how camber acts incorrect....

I see your point, it does sound like they are explaining camber at some point. Give it a day or two though, I'm sure there will be a few publications that write up a better explanation of the system.

Dual Axis Steering.

Developed in full view of the FIA. Rumored to be complex enough take more than 3 or 4 race weekends to duplicate and perhaps up to 6 months.

Mercedes is turning testing on its ear once again.

i'm kinda curious exactly how it works... is it mechanical or hydraulic? like a tiny hydraulic ram on an asymmetrical cantilever?

people are saying it is mechanical. anyway it is good to see some innovation and will probably be used in passenger car (especially sports car) soon

Buxton was saying most teams told him it would likely take half a season to duplicate the system and get it fitted to their car.
